»RAINER WÖLZL – KONSTELLATIONEN« 6. Juni bis 9. August 2026

Eröffnung: Freitag. 5. Juni 2026, 19 Uhr. Im Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin wird mit „Konstellationen“ eine umfangreiche Einzelausstellung des österreichischen Künstlers Rainer Wölzl gezeigt. Die Präsentation eröffnet einen eindringlichen Blick auf das vielschichtige Werk eines Künstlers, der sich seit Jahrzehnten mit den kulturellen, sozialen und politischen Verwerfungen unserer Zeit auseinandersetzt.

Rainer Wölzl, 1954 in Wien geboren, arbeitet heute vorwiegend mit der Technik der Kohlezeichnung. Seine meist großformatigen Arbeiten entstehen auf der Grundlage kunsthistorischer sowie medialer Bildquellen. Motive mit zeitgeschichtlicher und aktueller soziopolitischer Relevanz werden von ihm aufgegriffen und durch Montage in komplexe visuelle Konstellationen überführt, in denen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart aufeinandertreffen.

Die Ausstellung versammelt Arbeiten aus einem langjährig entwickelten Projekt unter dem erweiterten Gedanken eines „Museums der Schatten“. Der Begriff des Schattens fungiert dabei als poetischer wie politischer Denkraum – als Spur des Vergangenen, als Projektionsfläche und als Bestandteil individueller wie kollektiver Erinnerung.

Im Zentrum von Wölzls Werk steht ein kontinuierliches Nachdenken über Machtstrukturen, Unterdrückung und deren unterschiedliche Erscheinungsformen in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Kontexten. Seine künstlerische Praxis versteht sich als Strategie der Aneignung und Transformation: Bildmaterial wird nicht nur zitiert, sondern neu komponiert, verschoben und in einen offenen Bedeutungsraum überführt.

Charakteristisch für Wölzls Arbeiten ist ihre Mehrteiligkeit sowie eine rasterartige Struktur, die Distanz schafft und zugleich eine präzise gesellschaftspolitische Reflexion erlaubt. In bewusster Abgrenzung zur visuellen Überflutung digitaler Bildwelten setzen die Werke ein Zeichen gegen geschichtliches Vergessen und für die nachhaltige Kraft des gezeichneten Bildes.

Die Ausstellung ist die zweite museale Präsentation des Künstlers in Berlin, nachdem er 2002 im Georg Kolbe Museum mit der umfangreichen Werkserie „Ästhetik des Widerstands“ zu Peter Weiss vertreten war.“

»RAINER WÖLZL – CONSTELLATIONS« June 6th to August 9th, 2026
Opening: Friday. June 5, 2026, 7 p.m. “Constellations,” an extensive solo exhibition by the Austrian artist Rainer Wölzl, is being shown at the Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Berlin. The presentation offers a penetrating look at the complex work of an artist who has been grappling with the cultural, social and political upheavals of our time for decades.
Rainer Wölzl, born in Vienna in 1954, now works primarily with the technique of charcoal drawing. His mostly large-format works are created based on art historical and media image sources. He takes up motifs with contemporary and current socio-political relevance and, through montage, transforms them into complex visual constellations in which past and present meet.
The exhibition brings together works from a project that has been developed over many years under the expanded idea of a “Museum of Shadows”. The concept of the shadow functions as a poetic and political space for thought – as a trace of the past, as a projection surface and as a component of individual and collective memory.
At the center of Wölzl’s work is a continuous reflection on power structures, oppression and their different manifestations in different social contexts. His artistic practice sees itself as a strategy of appropriation and transformation: image material is not only quoted, but also recomposed, shifted and transferred into an open space of meaning.
Characteristic of Wölzl’s works is their multi-part nature and a grid-like structure that creates distance and at the same time allows precise socio-political reflection. In conscious differentiation from the visual flood of digital image worlds, the works set an example against historical forgetting and for the lasting power of the drawn image.
The exhibition is the artist’s second museum presentation in Berlin, after he was represented at the Georg Kolbe Museum in 2002 with the extensive series of works on Peter Weiss “Aesthetics of Resistance.”
