Peace March Montréal – its been only 35 years! Two participants still alive having a fun time talkin’! Montreal/Montréal | CA; Wien | AT · 1988–2023 (© PP · # 2801 · www.eternal-archives.org) Vor einigen Tagen erreichte mich per FB-messenger eine kurze Textnachricht: Jonathan hatte auf eine Nachricht von mir aus dem Jahr 2015 geantwortet (immerhin!) und fragte, ob ich mit ihm telefonieren möchte, er sei grad wieder in Montréal. Liebend gern, aber besser am nächsten Tag. Kurz die timedifference gecheckt und dann einen Tag später – 16 Uhr in Wien, 10 am in Montreal/Montréal – wars soweit und es kam zu einem heiteren, fast einstündigem Videocall zweier mittlerweile in jeder Hinsicht alter Freunde. Jonathan – auf dem Tableau rechts oben 1988 und darunter 2023 (ich vice versa) – hatte ich während meiner Zeit als artist in residence am Animation Department der Concordia University in Montreal im Jahr 1988 kennengelernt. Ich hatte einen Zettel gelesen, dass jemand für die Mitarbeit bei der grafischen Gestaltung von Postern zu Nicaragua gesucht wird, ich fand mich dafür geeignet und so kams zu einem Treffen zweier politisch Interessierter und Engagierter und es entwickelte sich eine Freundschaft, die bis jetzt andauert, obwohl es oft jahrelange „Funkstille“ zwischen uns gibt. Jonathan arbeitete für verschiedene NGOs unter anderem als fundraiser und engagiert sich seit langer Zeit besonders in Sachen Climate Change, lebt etwa zur Hälfte in Boston und in Montreal. Er produzierte die Titelschriften und Textinserts bei meinem 1988/89 entstandenen Film „Mont Real“ am Computer, beide marschierten wir beim „Peace March“ in Montréal mit, ich damals – wie am SW-Fotobeweis oben links sichtbar – mit noch (fast) vollem Haupthaar und deutlich schlanker, aber offensichtlich in bester Stimmung. Jonathan dokumentierte wie ich den Friedensmarsch (oben re.) Die kleinen Bilder sind screenshots des Videocalls vor einigen Tagen.

Eine starke Erinnerung, die ich nicht missen möchte und eine Freundschaft, die mein Leben bereichert. Let’s carry on!

Montreal/Montreal | CA; Vienna | AT · 1988–2023 (© PP · # 2801 · www.eternal-archives.org) A few days ago I received a short text message via FB messenger: Jonathan had replied to a message from me in 2015 (after all!) and asked if I would like to talk to him on the phone, he was just back in Montréal. I’d love to, but better the next day. We quickly checked the timedifference and then one day later – 4 p.m. in Vienna, 10 a.m. in Montreal/Montréal – it was time and there was a cheerful, almost one-hour video call between two friends who are now old in every respect. I met Jonathan – on the tableau top right 1988 and below 2023 (me vice versa) – during my time as artist in residence at the Animation Department of Concordia University in Montreal in 1988. I had read a note that someone was wanted to work on the graphic design of posters on Nicaragua, I found myself suitable for the job and so two people who were politically interested and committed came together and developed a friendship that has lasted until now, although there is often years of “radio silence” between us. Jonathan has worked for various NGOs, including as a fundraiser, and has been particularly involved in climate change for a long time. He lives about half in Boston and half in Montreal. He produced the headline fonts and text inserts for my 1988/89 film “Mont Real” on the computer, we both marched in the “Peace March” in Montréal, I at that time – as can be seen on the B&W photo proof top left – with a still (almost) full Hair on his head and noticeably slimmer, but obviously in the best of moods. Like me, Jonathan documented the peace march (above right). The small pictures are screenshots of the video call a few days ago.

A strong memory that I don’t want to miss and a friendship that enriches my life. Let’s carry on!
