„Mamma“ – Eine Installation · An Installation von/by Cornelius Kolig

„Mamma“ – Eine Installation von Cornelius Kolig und ein Beispiel für die Problematik der Restaurierung zeitgenössischer Kunstwerke. Vorderberg | AT · 2010–2023 (Werke: © Nachlass C. Kolig; Fotos & Tableau: © PP · # 2953 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) In der Paradies-Anlage von Cornelius Kolig (1942–2022) versammelt sind mehr als 400 Metallskulpturen, Objekte und Installationen sowie eine ungezählte Anzahl an Bildern, Zeichnungen, Skizzen, Fotografien, Video- und Audioaufzeichnungen. Am Beispiel der Installation „Mamma“ aus 1976 sei auf die Notwendigkeit und Problematik der sachgemäßen Restaurierung hingewiesen:

In der hinterlassenen, umfangreichen „Bedienungsanleitung“ für das Paradies, steht wie folgt:

„Mamma, 1976. Eimer in seiner tiefsten Position mit Milch füllen. Milch mit Heizstab auf Körpertemperatur bringen. E-Motor einschalten. Exzenter hebt Eimer einmal über das Niveau der weißen Latexbrüste und lässt ihn dann wieder unter ihre Lage absinken. Eimer und Brüste verhalten sich durch die sie verbindenden Schläuche wie kommunizierende Gefäße: Es kommt abwechselnd zu einer Volumenszu- und -abnahme der elastischen Latexbrüste. Mit verbundenen Augen spürt der Benutzer über seine aufgelegten Hände ihr Prall- und Schlaffwerden und die Wärme der weich gelagerten Nachbildungen. Er stellt den Rhythmus seiner Atmung auf ihr beruhigendes Pulsieren um. Alle milchführenden Teile nach Benutzung gründlich säubern. Latexballons wegen raschen Brüchigwerdens öfter tauschen. Wie C. Kolig vorstehend deutlich hingewiesen hat, werden ua. die Latexballons rasch brüchig (s. untere Reihe, 1. und 2. Foto). Das 3. Foto v. li. zeigt den Ersatz des Latexballons durch C. Kolig selbst mit Rohrschelle. Nach seinem Tod wurden die wieder brüchig gewordenen Latexballons ausgetauscht, allerdings ohne die erforderliche Rohrschelle zu befestigen: Nach der ersten Inbetriebnahme würde sich der Latexballon, weil nicht fest mit dem unter Druck stehendem Schlauch verbunden, sofort ablösen und die Flüssigkeit austreten. Kolig; Photos & Tableau: © PP – # 2953 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) The Paradise Installation by Cornelius Kolig (1942-2022) brings together more than 400 metal sculptures, objects and installations as well as an uncounted number of paintings, drawings, sketches, photographs, video and audio recordings. Using the example of the installation “Mamma” from 1976, the necessity and problem of proper restoration should be pointed out:
In the bequeathed, extensive “instruction manual” for Paradise, it reads as follows:
“Mamma, 1976. Fill bucket in its lowest position with milk. Bring milk to body temperature with heating rod. Switch on electric motor. Eccentric lifts bucket once above the level of the white latex breasts and then lowers it again below their position. The bucket and the breasts behave like communicating vessels through the tubes connecting them: the volume of the elastic latex breasts alternately increases and decreases. Blindfolded, the user feels their bouncing and sagging and the warmth of the softly supported replicas through his or her hands. He changes the rhythm of his breathing to their soothing pulsation. Clean all milk-bearing parts thoroughly after use. Replace latex balloons more often because of rapid brittleness. Videos, C-prints.”

As C. Kolig has clearly pointed out above, the latex balloons, among other things, quickly become brittle (see bottom row, 1st and 2nd photo). The 3rd photo from the left shows the replacement of the latex balloon by C. Kolig himself with a pipe clamp. After his death, the latex balloons, which had become brittle again, were replaced, but without attaching the necessary pipe clamp: After the first start-up, the latex balloon, because not firmly connected to the pressurised tube, would immediately detach and the liquid would leak out.
