Die Löwen von Bad Ischl vs die Löwen vom Ischtar-Tor im Pergamon-Museum. Bad Ischl | AT · Berlin | DE · 2013–2021 (© PP · # 2234 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Irgendwann vor 10 oder 20 Jahren hat’s meiner Erinnerung nach begonnen: In kleineren Städten tauchten schlagartig und massenhaft überdimensionale Plastik-„Tiere“ auf – Kühe, Hunde, Löwen uva. – in Parkanlagen, vor Juwelier-Geschäften, Drogerien etc. Irgendjemand hatte offensichtlich die Geschäfts-Idee, an Interessent*innen diese Plastik-Objekte zu verhökern mit der Anregung, sie von Künstler*innen, Kunst-Gewerbler*innen und anderem kunstaffinem Personal „kreativ“ bemalen zu lassen und sie als „Blickfang“ aufzustellen. Seither stehen sie. Diese hier in Bad Ischl – der künftigen Bad Ischl · Salzkammergut · Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2024. Soll sein – solange sie nicht jemanden fressen.

Das Ischtar-Tor – eines der Stadttore von Babylon – sowie die Prozessionsstraße wurden in ihrer endgültigen Form unter der Herrschaft von Nebukadnezar II. (605–562 v. Chr.) errichtet. Babylon war die Hauptstadt Babyloniens und lag am Euphrat im heutigen Zentral-Irak.

Ein Nachbau des Ischtar-Tors ist seit 1930 im Vorderasiatischen Museum zu sehen, das im Pergamonmuseum in Berlin untergebracht ist. Das Tor war Teil der Mauern von Babylon, die nach älteren Listen zu den sieben Weltwundern der Antike gehörten.

Das Ischtar-Tor und die Prozessionsstraße wurden im Pergamonmuseum unter Verwendung der glasierten Original-Lehmziegel rekonstruiert. Die Wände des Tores und der Straße sind ausgeschmückt mit Darstellungen von Löwen, Stieren und Drachen, die Symbole für die Hauptgottheiten Babyloniens sind.

Die dargestellten Löwen sind Symbole der Göttin Ištar, Herrin des Himmels, Liebesgöttin und Beschützerin der Armee. Die schlangenähnlichen Mischwesen (Mušḫuššu oder Bel genannt) stellen Marduk dar, den Gott der Stadt und der Fruchtbarkeit, der ewiges Leben schenkte. Die wilden Stiere symbolisierten den Wettergott Adad.

They have been standing since then. These here in Bad Ischl – the future Bad Ischl · Salzkammergut · European Capital of Culture 2024. Should be – as long as they don’t eat anyone.

The Ishtar Gate – one of the city gates of Babylon – and the processional street were built in their final form under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC). Babylon was the capital of Babylonia and was located on the Euphrates in what is now central Iraq.
A replica of the Ishtar Gate has been on view since 1930 in the Vorderasiatisches Museum, which is housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. The gate was part of the walls of Babylon, which, according to older lists, belonged to the seven wonders of the world of antiquity.
The Ishtar Gate and the processional street were reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum using the original glazed clay bricks. The walls of the gate and the street are decorated with representations of lions, bulls and dragons, symbols of the main deities of Babylonia.
The lions depicted are symbols of the goddess Ištar, mistress of the sky, goddess of love and protector of the army. The snake-like hybrid creatures (called Mušḫuššu or Bel) represent Marduk, the god of the city and fertility, who gave eternal life. The wild bulls symbolized the weather god Adad.
