Laterna Magica. Wien | AT · 2010 – 2015 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) „Die Laterna magica (lateinisch für „Zauberlaterne“), auch Skioptikon genannt, ist ein Projektionsgerät, das vom 17. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein in ganz Europa verbreitet war und im 19. Jahrhundert zum Massenmedium avancierte. Sie stellte die technisch-apparative Zusammenfassung bekannter optischer Effekte in einem einzigen Instrument dar. Die verschiedenen Formen der Bildprojektion der Laterna magica werden unter dem Begriff der Projektionskunst zusammengefasst. Die Laterna magica ist eine Projektionsvorrichtung, die nach dem umgekehrten optischen Prinzip der Camera obscura funktioniert: Es handelt sich um einen Kasten mit einer Öffnung, in dem sich eine Lichtquelle befindet – im 17. Jahrhundert zunächst eine schlichte Kerze, Öllampe oder Pechfackel, später ein Kalklichtbrenner oder eine elektrische Bogenlampe. Dieses Licht dringt durch die Öffnung und durch ein Linsensystem an der Vorderseite des Kastens nach außen. Ein Hohlspiegel hinter der Lichtquelle erhöht die Helligkeit des austretenden Lichtstrahls. In die Bildführung, die zwischen Kasten und Linsensystem angebracht ist, werden die Laternbilder eingeschoben und mit dem ausfallenden Licht projiziert. In der Bildführung sind Mechanismen zum Bildwechsel und oftmals auch für Bildbewegungen integriert. Gegenständliche Bilder, aber auch Schrift, Farbenspiele oder Ornamente werden auf diese Weise auf eine Projektionsfläche (meist eine Leinwand) geworfen. Die Laterna magica ist damit Vorläufer der modernen Diaprojektion sowie der Filmprojektion.“ (wiki)

Das große Foto links ist eine Laterna Magica, die mein Großvater Johann Promberger hinterlassen hat – zusammen mit zwei hölzernen Kästen, in denen rund 200 großformatige Dias – SW-Fotografien bzw. bemalte Gläser (s. links oben) aufbewahrt werden. Die Fotografien hat er gekauft – viele stammen vom Gmundner Fotografen Friedrich Moser j., das obere 2. Foto zeigt John Rustons Werkstätte, 1906, Dia, 80 x 80 mm. John Ruston Ruston entwarf 1837 erste Pläne für den Traunseedampfer "Sophie", dessen Dampfmaschine und Kessel von der englischen Firma "Boulton & Watt" hergestellt wurden. Das große Foto rechts zeigt eine prachtvolle Laterna Magica aus Ausstellung zur Kinematographie in Paris. Untere Reihe, 3. Foto: eine geöffnete Laterna Magica gibt den Blick frei auf den Kohlestab, der zur Erzeugung des Lichtbogens für die Projektion nötig war, daneben eine Doppel-Laterna Magica (Ausstellung Österr. Vienna | AT · 2010 – 2015 (© PP · Eternal Archives) “The Laterna magica (Latin for” magic lantern “), also called Skioptikon, is a projection device that was widespread throughout Europe from the 17th to the 20th century Century became a mass medium. It presented the technical-apparatus summary of known optical effects in a single instrument. The different forms of image projection of the lantern magica are summarized under the term of projection art. The Laterna magica is a projection device that works on the reverse optical principle of the Camera obscura: It is a box with an opening in which there is a light source – in the 17th century, first a simple candle, oil lamp or pitch torch, and later Kalklichtbrenner or an electric arc lamp. This light penetrates through the opening and through a lens system on the front of the box to the outside. A concave mirror behind the light source increases the brightness of the exiting light beam. In the image guide, which is mounted between the box and lens system, the lantern images are inserted and projected with the outgoing light. The image guidance includes mechanisms for changing images and often also for image movements. Figurative pictures, but also writing, play of colors or ornaments are thus thrown onto a projection surface (usually a canvas). The large photo on the left is a lanterna Magica, left by my grandfather Johann Promberger – together with two wooden boxes, in which about 200 large-format slides – SW photographs or painted glasses (see above left) are kept. He bought the photographs – many from the Gmundner photographer Friedrich Moser j., The upper 2nd photo shows John Ruston’s workshop, 1906, slide, 80 x 80 mm. In 1837, John Ruston Ruston designed the first plans for the steamship “Sophie”, whose steam engine and boiler were manufactured by the British company “Boulton & Watt”.
