Bruegel, Banksy, Blend-a-Med: Was ist Kunst? / What’s art about? Amsterdam | NL; Berlin | DE; Wien | AT · 2002 – 2018 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv). Die Frage „Was ist denn (jetzt) Kunst?“ sollte mich nicht in Verlegenheit bringen und tut’s auch nicht. Immerhin habe ich auf der Angewandten studiert – bei großartigen Professor*innen wie Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat und Peter Gorsen. Ich habe auf diese Frage – so wie jede(r) – mehrere passende Antworten bereit, je nach Anlassfall und Stimmung.

Standardmäßig passt immer: Kunst/Art ist das, was Artdirektor*innen von Werbeagenturen freigeben. Das gleiche gilt natürlich auch für den Begriff Kreativität/creativity: das ist das, was Creativ-directors in Agenturen überwachen.

Das war jetzt die einfache Antwort. ;-)

Die etwas komplexeren Antworten beschäftigen mich nun schon einige Jahrzehnte – und allein das ist für mich eine der ganz wesentlichen Funktionen von Kunst: nämlich, über die Zusammenhänge und Widersprüche von Kunst und Leben nachzudenken.

The question “What is art (now)?” Should not embarrass me and it does not. After all, I studied at the Angewandte – with great professors like Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat and Peter Gorsen. As with any other person, I have several suitable answers to this question, depending on the case and the mood.
By default, art / art is always what art directors release from advertising agencies. The same applies of course to the term creativity / creativity: that is what creativ-directors monitor in agencies.
That was the simple answer now. 😉
The somewhat more complex answers have been occupying my mind for several decades – and for me alone this is one of the very essential functions of art: namely, thinking about the connections and contradictions of art and life.
