Ein Fahrrad mit Lenkrad · A bicycle with a steering wheel

Ein Mann mit Hut hat beide Hände am Lenkrad seines Fahrrades und schaut mich an. Berlin | DE; Ebensee, Wien | AT · um 1920–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv, SW-Foto: Johann Promberger) In der linken Hand hält er eine Zigarillo, vermutlich eine „Virginia“, der linke Fuß ruht auf dem Pedal, er könnte jeden Moment losfahren, wartet aber, bis der Fotograf scharf gestellt und die Glasplatte mit der lichtempfindlichen Emulsion belichtet hat. Unterhalb des Lenkrades ist eine Klingel angebracht, Bremsen sind keine sichtbar, allerdings hatte das Fahrrad keine Gangschaltung – es war also ein „Fixie“ – und auch keinen Freilauf. An der vorderen Radgabel ist eine Karbidlampe befestigt. Das Foto machte Johann Promberger in Ebensee/OÖ um 1920 – einige Jahre früher oder später, keine Ahnung. Mein Großvater und auch der Mann auf dem Foto sind längst verstorben. Das Glasnegativ der Aufnahme hat die Zeiten überstanden (viele andere nicht, einige hat meine Mutter abgewaschen, um die Fotoemulsion zu entfernen und die etwa postkarten-großen Gläser zum Rahmen von „Mecki“-Karten für mich zu verwenden.) Dieses Glasnegativ jedenfalls wurde in sehr hoher Auflösung verscannt, die Kratzer, Punkte und Einschlüsse in der Emulsion habe ich belassen.

Was abgesehen vom Gesamteindruck dieses historischen Fotos für mich bemerkenswert ist: Die Grundkonstruktion des Fahrrad-Rahmens ist de facto ident mit dem roten Radskelett auf der rechten Seite des Tableau, das eine Arxxxgeige so zurückgelassen hat. (Hier derbe Flüche und Verwünschungen gegen alle, die Fahrräder stehlen, zertreten, berauben, demontieren. Der Blitz möge Euch beim Sch. . . en treffen!)

Das rote Fahrrad hat im Unterschied zum linken jedenfalls einen Namen: Es heißt ARTEMIS – BORN TO BE A BIKE – GENESIS. Also hier ein authentisches Objekt der Schöpfungsgeschichte – leider lädiert. Die Begleiträder oben und unten mögen als kleine Beispiele für die vielen zeitgenössischen Facetten des Fahrrades dienen. Hallelujah!

Eine Karbidlampe ist eine Gaslampe, in welcher der Brennstoff in chemisch gebundener Form – in der Regel als Calciumcarbid – transportiert und erst kurz vor der Verbrennung in Gas umgewandelt wird.

There is a bell below the steering wheel, no brakes are visible, but the bike had no gear shift – so it was a “fixie” – and no freewheel either. A carbide lamp is attached to the front wheel fork. Johann Promberger took the photo in Ebensee / Upper Austria around 1920 – a few years earlier or later, I have no idea. My grandfather and the man in the photo have long since passed away. The glass negative of the photo has survived the times (not many others, my mother washed some of them to remove the photo emulsion and to use the postcard-sized glasses to frame “Mecki” cards for me.) This glass negative was in any case in Scanned in very high resolution, I left the scratches, dots and inclusions in the emulsion.
What is remarkable for me, apart from the overall impression of this historical photo: The basic construction of the bicycle frame is de facto identical to the red wheel skeleton on the right side of the tableau, which an Arxxx violin left behind. (Here heavy curses and curses against all who steal, trample, rob, dismantle bicycles. May the lightning strike you at the Sch… En!)
In any case, the red bike, unlike the left, has a name: It’s called ARTEMIS – BORN TO BE A BIKE – GENESIS. So here an authentic object of the creation story – unfortunately damaged. The accompanying wheels above and below may serve as small examples of the many contemporary facets of the bicycle. Hallelujah!

A carbide lamp is a gas lamp in which the fuel is transported in chemically bound form – usually as calcium carbide – and is only converted into gas shortly before combustion.
