Weihnachten im wilden Osten: Wesołych Świąt! In Quarantäne im „Ostblock“ – hinter dem „Eisernen Vorhang“. Poznań | PL · 1977 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Vor 43 Jahren lebte ich in einem Land, das für wohl die meisten Menschen damals im „freien Westen“ – mich natürlich eingeschlossen – terra inkognita war: In Polen, im kommunistischen Ostblock, irgendwo hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang. Europa war eingeteilt bzw. besser: getrennt in die Staaten der NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization „Organisation des Nordatlantikvertrags“), geprägt von den USA und die Staaten des „Warschauer Paktes“ unter der Führung der Sowjetunion. Ich studierte damals an der Angewandten und hatte um ein Auslandsstipendium angesucht in Polen, weil ich dort absolut niemanden kannte, mich für ein Land interessierte, das nicht besonders weit entfernt und doch weitgehend unbekannt war. Das Stipendium war leicht zu bekommen – meine Kolleg*innen, die ins Ausland wollten, interessierten sich für London, Paris, Tokio usw. – jedenfalls glamourösere Städte. Das Studienjahr 1977/78 verbrachte ich also an der Kunstakademie in Poznań (Posen), auf gleicher Höhe wie Warschau, aber 300 km weiter im Westen liegend, relativ nahe zur (auch: damaligen) DDR (Deutschen Demokratischen Republik)
Zur Weihnachtszeit in Polen war ich begeistert von den kleinen Christbäumen mit elektrischen Kerzen und Lametta, die in jedem, wirklich jedem Schaufenster in Poznan/Polen standen: Magic moments – klarerweise musste ich sie immer wieder fotografieren, selbstverständlich „analog“ – mit ORWO Diafilm aus der DDR, der innerhalb einer Woche entwickelt wurde und den ich unzerschnitten in kleinen Plastikdosen zurück bekam. Heutzutage für mich ein serieller Schatz, kostbare Dokumente im Ewigen Archiv! „Quarantäne“ war es in politischem Sinne und auch, was den Kontakt zu Österreich betraf: Natürlich kein Internet, kein „Handy“, die Kommunikation verlief über Briefe, die oft lange Zeit unterwegs waren. Soweit ich mich erinnere, habe ich nur zu Weihnachten bei meiner Familie angerufen.
Damals haben mich neben vielem anderem die Schaufenster besonders beschäftigt – ja: fasziniert. Aus der grotesken Überfülle des kapitalistischen „Westens“ kommend mit den überladenen, schick aufgepeppten Schaufenstern, in denen die Waren oft mit erotisch-/sexuellen Implikationen aufgeladen waren (und: immer noch sind), empfand ich die Schaufenster in Polen, die meinem Empfinden nach karg und nüchtern das vorhandene Angebot schlicht zeigten, als interessanten Gegenpol. Die kleinen Christbäume, die unvermutet massiv auftauchten, waren eine willkommene Abwechslung.
Der in die Kamera feixende Typ mit dem Wuschelkopf: ja – das bin bzw. war ich. Kleine Wegmarken im Strom der Zeit.
Ich habe mein Studienjahr an einer Kunstakademie in Poznan/Polen vor über 40 Jahren in bester Erinnerung, weil ich viele offene und herzliche Menschen kennengelernt und eine Reihe von Freundschaften geschlossen habe. Eine Zeit, die ich nicht missen möchte.

„Społem“ war eine staatliche Lebensmittel-Kette;
Die NATO (englisch North Atlantic Treaty Organization „Organisation des Nordatlantikvertrags“ bzw. Nordatlantikpakt-Organisation), im Deutschen häufig als Atlantisches Bündnis oder als Nordatlantikpakt bezeichnet (französisch OTAN – Organisation du Traité de l’Atlantique Nord), ist eine Internationale Organisation ohne Hoheitsrechte. Ihre Mitgliedstaaten behalten ihre volle Souveränität und Unabhängigkeit. Basis der NATO ist der Nordatlantikvertrag nach Artikel 51 der UN-Charta. Ihre Organisation versteht sich nicht nur als Verteidigungsbündnis, sondern auch als militärisch-politische Organisation von 30 europäischen und nordamerikanischen Mitgliedstaaten mit dem Ziel eigener Sicherheit und weltweiter Stabilität.
Der Warschauer Pakt – eine im Westen gebräuchliche Bezeichnung, im offiziellen Sprachgebrauch der Teilnehmerstaaten Warschauer Vertrag bzw. Warschauer Vertragsorganisation genannt – war ein von 1955 bis 1991 bestehender militärischer Beistandspakt des sogenannten Ostblocks unter der Führung der Sowjetunion.
Er wurde mit dem Warschauer Vertrag über Freundschaft, Zusammenarbeit und gegenseitigen Beistand (kurz: Warschauer Vertrag – WV) gegründet und bildete im Kalten Krieg das Gegenstück zum US-amerikanisch geprägten NATO-Bündnis, dem Nordatlantikpakt. Wirtschaftlich waren die Ostblockstaaten bereits seit 1949 im Rat für gegenseitige Wirtschaftshilfe zusammengeschlossen. Mit dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs begannen die strengen Strukturen des Warschauer Paktes zunehmend zu erodieren, woraufhin sich dieser 1991 offiziell auflöste.
Christmas in the Wild East: Wesołych Świąt! In quarantine in the “Eastern Bloc” – behind the “Iron Curtain”. Poznań | PL · 1977 (© PP · Eternal Archives) 43 years ago I lived in a country that for most people in the “free West” – including me, of course – was terra incognita: In Poland, in the communist Eastern bloc, somewhere behind the Iron curtain. Europe was divided or better: separated into the states of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization “Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty”), shaped by the USA and the states of the “Warsaw Pact” under the leadership of the Soviet Union. At that time I was studying at the University of Applied Sciences and had applied for a scholarship abroad in Poland because I knew absolutely no one there and was interested in a country that was not particularly far away and yet largely unknown. The scholarship was easy to get – my colleagues who wanted to go abroad were interested in London, Paris, Tokyo, etc. – more glamorous cities, anyway. So I spent the academic year 1977/78 at the Art Academy in Poznań (Posen), at the same height as Warsaw, but 300 km further to the west, relatively close to the (also: then) GDR (German Democratic Republic) At Christmas time in Poland I was enthusiastic about the little Christmas trees with electric candles and tinsel that were in every, really every shop window in Poznan / Poland: Magic moments – of course I had to take pictures again and again, of course “analog” – with ORWO slide film the GDR, which was developed within a week and which I got back uncut in small plastic cans. A serial treasure for me nowadays, precious documents in the Eternal Archive! It was “quarantine” in a political sense and also when it came to contact with Austria: Of course no internet, no “cell phone”, communication was via letters that were often on the move for a long time. As far as I can remember, I only called my family for Christmas. At that time, besides many other things, I was particularly concerned with the shop windows – yes: fascinated. Coming out of the grotesque overabundance of the capitalist “West” with the cluttered, stylishly pepped up shop windows, in which the goods were often charged with erotic / sexual implications (and: still are), I felt the shop windows in Poland, which I felt barely and soberly showed the existing offer as an interesting counterpoint. The small Christmas trees, which suddenly appeared massive, were a welcome change. The guy with the fuzzy head smirking into the camera: yes – that’s or was me. Small waypoints in the flow of time. I have fond memories of my academic year at an art academy in Poznan / Poland over 40 years ago, because I met many open and warm people and made a number of friendships. A time that I don’t want to miss.
