EXPO Osaka 2025 meets Katsushika Hokusais „Die große Welle vor Kanagawa“! Kanaldeckel in Japan! Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka | JP · 2025 (© PP · # 3499 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Über 12.000 (!) unterschiedliche Motive zieren Japans Schachtabdeckungen. Für mich eines von vielen Beispielen für die Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit, die in Japan Gestaltungen für den öffentlichen Raum geschenkt wird.

Die große Welle vor Kanagawa (jap. 神奈川沖浪裏 Kanagawa oki nami ura), eigentlich Unter der Welle im Meer vor Kanagawa, ist der Titel eines Farbholzschnitts im Ukiyo-e Stil des japanischen Künstlers Katsushika Hokusai.

Der Druck ist das erste und bekannteste Blatt der 1830 bis 1836 entstandenen Serie 36 Ansichten des Berges Fuji, in der Hokusai auf insgesamt 46 Bildern die Landschaften rund um den Fuji darstellte. Hokusai, der knapp neunzig Jahre alt wurde, fertigte diesen Holzschnitt mit ca. siebzig Jahren an. Das Blatt ist der bekannteste japanische Druck und gehört zu den berühmtesten graphischen Werken der Welt.

For me, this is one of many examples of the care and attention that is given to designs for public spaces in Japan.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Japanese: 神奈川沖浪裏 Kanagawa oki nami ura), actually Under the Wave off Kanagawa, is the title of a colour woodblock print in the ukiyo-e style by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.

The print is the first and best-known sheet in the series 36 Views of Mount Fuji, created between 1830 and 1836, in which Hokusai depicted the landscapes around Mount Fuji in a total of 46 pictures. Hokusai, who lived to be almost ninety years old, created this woodblock print at around the age of seventy. The print is the most famous Japanese print and one of the most famous graphic works in the world.
