GAIA ZULIEBE von Cornelius Kolig – eine Aufforderung, sich an der Autobahn in die Tiefe zu stürzen. Thörl-Maglern | AT · 1992–2024 (Werk © C. Kolig, Fotocredits s. Text · © PP · # 3194 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Vor wenigen Tagen bat ich auf der Fahrt zum kleinen italienischen Ort Malborghetto um einen kurzen Halt auf dem Pannenstreifen der Autobahn bei Thörl-Maglern, an der Grenze zu Italien. Ich wollte „GAIA ZULIEBE“, eine Arbeit von Cornelius Kolig, nach vielen Jahren wieder einmal sehen und fotografieren. Ich kann mich gut daran erinnern, wie mir Cornelius Kolig in den 1980-er Jahren bei einem Besuch in seinem damaligen Atelier in der ehemaligen Volksschule von St. Martin die Entwürfe und Pläne dazu zeigte und auch einige Muster der vielen färbigen Plexiglastafeln, die das grob aufgelöste, pixellierte Sujet der stilisierten Anthurie bilden. Es ist eine Arbeit, die nichts an Aktualität und Dringlichkeit eingebüßt hat, und zeigt, wie scharf und klar Kolig die Zerstörung der Welt thematisiert hat. Das ursprünglich freistehende Objekt ist allerdings mittlerweile von dichten Bäumen umgeben – es wäre erforderlich, diese zu reduzieren um einen besseren Blick darauf wieder zu ermöglichen.

„Am Dreiländereck Italien, Slowenien und Österreich, im Schnittpunkt dreier Kulturen, der romanischen, slawischen und germanischen, grüßt GAIA, eine riesige Palette, ein Herz, eine Anthurienblüte, eine Form, die sich im gesamten Werk Cornelius Koligs findet. Von Farbenpracht und Ästhetik der hochaufragenden Skulptur sollte sich der Vorbeifahrende nicht blenden lassen. Koligs Wegzeichen muss als kritische Äußerung zur Umweltsituation, zum Wahnsinn des Verkehrs verstanden werden, als bewusster Gegensatz zur schroffen Symbolik einer männlich dominierten Welt, trägt GAIA die Widersprüche in sich“ Intro-Kommentar im Film „Das Paradies des Cornelius Kolig“ von Helga Ripper Fred Dickermann aus 1992, eine WDW-Produktion im Auftrag des ORF Kärnten.

„Grade eben an der Autobahn steht dieses Objekt, das die Leute auffordert, die Leiter, die an der Rückseite des Herzens hochführt zu diesem Palettenloch dort hochzusteigen und sich durchs Palettenloch auf die Autobahn vor die Lkws und Pkws zu stürzen oder für zielsichere Leute die könnten sich also direkt an diesem Herzspieß im freien Fall dann aufspießen. Es ist einfach eine Aufforderung zum Selbstmord: Bringt euch um, bevor ihr die Welt umbringt und mit euch die Welt mitreisst“

GAIA ZULIEBE by Cornelius Kolig – an invitation to plunge into the depths along the motorway. Thörl-Maglern | AT – 1992-2024 (Work © C. Kolig, photo credits see text – © PP – # 3194 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) A few days ago, on my way to the small Italian town of Malborghetto, I asked for a short stop on the hard shoulder of the motorway near Thörl-Maglern, on the border with Italy. I wanted to see and photograph “GAIA ZULIEBE”, a work by Cornelius Kolig, again after many years. I can well remember how Cornelius Kolig showed me the designs and plans for it during a visit to his studio in the former primary school in St. Martin in the 1980s, as well as some samples of the many coloured Plexiglas panels that form the roughly resolved, pixellated subject of the stylised anthurium. It is a work that has lost none of its topicality and urgency and shows how sharply and clearly Kolig has thematised the destruction of the world. However, the originally free-standing object is now surrounded by dense trees – it would be necessary to reduce these to allow a better view of it again.

“At the border triangle of Italy, Slovenia and Austria, at the intersection of three cultures – Romanesque, Slavic and Germanic – GAIA, a huge palette, a heart, an anthurium blossom, a form that can be found throughout Cornelius Kolig’s work, greets us. Passers-by should not be dazzled by the colourfulness and aesthetics of the towering sculpture. “Right next to the motorway is this object that invites people to climb up the ladder that leads up the back of the heart to this pallet hole there and throw themselves through the pallet hole onto the motorway in front of the trucks and cars, or for unerring people they could impale themselves directly on this heart skewer in free fall. It’s simply a call to suicide: kill yourselves before you kill the world and take the world with you”
