Dreharbeiten im Wohnzimmer: Kulturfestival der Autochthonen. Das Reservat ist besetzt! Die Mohawks haben recht! Montréal / Montreal | CA · 1988/89 (© PP · # 2692 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Im Oktober 1988 war ich nach Canada gekommen, um ein Studienjahr lang als artist in residence am Animation-Department der Concordia University zu arbeiten, fallweise Lectures über österreichische Animationsfilme und meine eigenen Arbeiten zu geben und vor allem, um dort einen Film zu drehen. Montréal / Montreal gefiel mir von Anfang an sehr gut, es ist eine multikulturell geprägte Stadt mit starken europäischen Einflüssen, und: sie ist offiziell zweisprachig, französisch und englisch mit vielen anderen Sprachen, selbstverständlich auch den autochthonen – also den Sprachen der „first Nations“. Zwischen den „Frankophonen“ und „Anglophonen“ gibt es traditionell starke Konflikte, die mir grundsätzlich von den Konflikten zwischen den „Deutschsprachigen“ und den „Slowenischsprachigen“ in Kärnten, wo ich einige Jahre gelebt hatte, sehr vertraut waren. Ein paar Tage nach meiner Ankunft besuchte ich ein Kulturfestival der Autochthonen („die, die eine eigene Sprache haben“), das allerdings nach einiger Zeit wegen einer Bombendrohung von der Polizei unterbrochen wurde. Es war also für mich sofort klar, dass ich auch diese Konflikte in meinem im Entstehen begriffenen Film „Mont Real“ thematisieren wollte (link s.u.). Für diesen Film – eine Mischung aus Animation und Live-Action – baute ich eine Reihe von Objekten aus Karton, den ich als Abfallmaterial eines Möbelgeschäftes im Haus, in dem ich und Barbara (Foto li. unt.) damals wohnten, kostenlos zur Verfügung hatte. Die Wohnung in der Sherbrooke Av. Ouest war sowohl Lebensbereich als auch Werkstätte und Aufnahmestudio. Eine großartige, turbulente, intensive Zeit mit wunderbaren Menschen, die wir dort kennenlernten.

Dieses hier gezeigte Objekt hatte ich mit Lichterketten und verschiedenen blinkenden Lampen ausgestattet, bzw. rechts unten mit einem Eishockey-Helm.

I really liked Montréal / Montreal right from the start, it is a multicultural city with strong European influences, and: it is officially bilingual, French and English with many other languages, of course also the autochthonous ones – i.e. the languages of the “first nations” . There are traditionally strong conflicts between the “Francophones” and “Anglophones”, which I was basically very familiar with from the conflicts between the “German-speakers” and the “Slovene-speakers” in Carinthia, where I had lived for a number of years. A few days after my arrival I attended a cultural festival of the autochthons (“those who have their own language”), which was interrupted by the police after a while because of a bomb threat. So it was immediately clear to me that I also wanted to address these conflicts in my film “Mont Real”, which was still in the making (see link below). For this film – a mixture of animation and live action – I built a series of objects from cardboard, which I had free of charge as waste material from a furniture store in the house where I and Barbara (photo left below) lived at the time . The apartment at Sherbrooke Av. Ouest was both a living space and a workshop and recording studio. A great, turbulent, intense time with wonderful people that we met there.
I equipped the object shown here with fairy lights and various flashing lamps, and with an ice hockey helmet on the bottom right.
