„Der Erde zuliebe“ – sich umbringen. Eine Installation von Cornelius Kolig. Vorderberg | AT · 1988–2023 (Werke: © Nachlass C. Kolig; Fotos & Tableau: © PP · # 2979 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Im Video „Cornelius Kolig führt durchs Paradies“ sagt der Künstler zu dieser Arbeit: „Eine Neonschrift mit dem Text „Der Erde zuliebe“ – das ist die Schaltvorrichtung, wenn man den Hebel betätigt, gerät man in den Stromkreis, ist vermutlich tot und dann leuchtet die Schrift „Der Erde zuliebe.“ Das große Foto links wurde am 5. Juni 2023 bei den Dreharbeiten für dieses Video aufgenommen, nur wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod. (im Bild Moni Parii, Kamerafrau und Editorin des Videos) Bei manchen Arbeiten von Cornelius Kolig, den ich im Jahr 1981 kennenlernte, habe ich lange Zeit gebraucht, um sie einigermaßen „zu verstehen“ – diese war eine davon. Im Grunde ist es aber einfach – und angesichts dessen, was Menschen einander angetan haben und fortwährend antun und wie sie – bzw. wir – die Erde zerstören, kann ich die sicher zugespitzte Aussage und Bedeutung dieses Werkes mittlerweile sehr gut nachvollziehen.

Vorsicht! Lebensgefahr! Nach Betätigung des Schalthebels steht dieser unter Hochspannung, gleichzeitiges Aufleuchten der Neonschrift.

Kolig; Photos & Tableau: © PP – # 2979 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) In the video “Cornelius Kolig führt durchs Paradies” (Cornelius Kolig leads through paradise) the artist says about this work: “A neon sign with the text “Der Erde zuliebe” (For the sake of the earth) – that’s the switching device, if you press the lever you get caught in the circuit, you’re presumably dead and then the writing “For the sake of the earth” lights up.” The large photo on the left was taken on 5 June 2023 during the filming of this video, just a few weeks before his death. (Pictured is Moni Parii, cinematographer and editor of the video) Some of the work of Cornelius Kolig, whom I met in 1981, took me a long time to reasonably “get” – this was one of them. But basically it is simple – and in view of what people have done and continue to do to each other and how they – or we – are destroying the earth, I can now very well understand the certainly pointed statement and meaning of this work.
