Montréal | CA; Osaka | JP; Poznan | PL · 1942–2025 (Filmstills Hen Hop © National Film Board of Canada∞ © PP · # 3513 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Heute Abend bin ich von ASIFA Austria, dem österreichischen Zweig des internationalen Verbandes von Animationsfilmschaffenden (Association internationale du film d’animation) eingeladen, im Rahmen eines „Salons“ über meine Animationsfilme zu sprechen. Das ist für mich eine große Ehre, eine Freude und auch eine Möglichkeit, über meine Arbeit zu reflektieren. An dieser Stelle nur ein kleines Fragment, in dem ich für mich selbst zusammengefasst habe, wie meine Leidenschaft und Begeisterung für Animationsfilm begann: Im Jahr 1977 studierte ich in Poznan/Polen an der dortigen Akademie der schönen Künste Grafik, insbesondere Plakatgrafik, die in Polen einen besonderen Stellenwert hatte. Bei einem vom dortigen Studenten-Filmklub veranstalteten Filmabend sah ich ein Programm mit Filmen des an sich aus Schottland stammenden, aber in Kanada lebenden Norman McLaren, die er direkt auf blanke Filmstreifen gezeichnet und später in einem weiteren Prozess koloriert hatte. Ich war so begeistert, dass ich am selben Abend totale Lust hatte, selber Filme zu machen und mit dem Filmklub Kontakt aufnahm und dort meinen allerersten „Zeichentrick“-Film OBUWIE (Schuhe) produzierte. Norman McLaren widmete ich das Plakat „Films Handmade by Norman McLaren“. Daneben ein Plakat für meinen OBUWIE-Film.

Ein Jahrzehnt später war ich artist in residence an der Concordia University in Montreal – leider war Norman McLaren ein Jahr vorher verstorben. Ihm widme ich meinen heutigen „Salon“.

Die kleinen Fotos sind Filmstills aus McLarens wunderbarem Film „Hen Hop“ aus dem Jahr 1942.

Das große SW-Foto und das kleine oberhalb zeigen mich im Jahr 1978 bei einem Interview im polnischen Fernsehen zu meinem Film OBUWIE, der bei mehreren polnischen Filmfestivals einen Preis gewonnen hatte! Das kleine Foto rechts oben zeigt mich bei der Präsentation meines Films „FOCUS ART CARINTHIA“ über vier Künstler*innen aus Kärnten, den ich im Auftrag der Kärntner Kulturstiftung und des Landes Kärntens für den Österreich Pavillon der EXPO Osaka 2025 gemacht hatte.

This is a great honour and a pleasure for me, as well as an opportunity to reflect on my work. At this point, I would like to share a small fragment in which I have summarised for myself how my passion and enthusiasm for animated film began: In 1977, I studied graphic design, in particular poster design, which had a special status in Poland, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. At a film evening organised by the local student film club, I saw a programme of films by Norman McLaren, who was originally from Scotland but lived in Canada, which he had drawn directly onto blank film strips and later coloured in a further process. I was so enthusiastic that I felt an overwhelming desire to make films myself that very evening, so I contacted the film club and produced my very first ‘animated’ film, OBUWIE (Shoes). (see link)

I dedicated the poster ‘Films Handmade by Norman McLaren’ to Norman McLaren. Next to it is a poster for my OBUWIE film.

A decade later, I was artist in residence at Concordia University in Montreal – unfortunately, Norman McLaren had passed away a year earlier. I dedicate my current ‘Salon’ to him.

The small photos are film stills from McLaren’s wonderful film ‘Hen Hop’ from 1942.

The large black-and-white photo and the small one above show me in 1978 during an interview on Polish television about my film OBUWIE, which had won awards at several Polish film festivals! The small photo at the top right shows me at the presentation of my film ‘FOCUS ART CARINTHIA’ about four artists from Carinthia, which I made on behalf of the Carinthian Cultural Foundation and the Province of Carinthia for the Austrian Pavilion at EXPO Osaka 2025.
