Wie meine Lebenszeit durchrauscht! Jetzt bin ich schon in den letzten Runden! Heiter-/besinnliche Reminiszenzen anlässlich der Ausstellung „BILD FÜR BILD – ASIFA Austria VON 1985 BIS HEUTE“, die im Künstlerhaus am Do., 9. Juli 2026 um 19 Uhr eröffnet werden wird und bei der ich – fast 50 (fünfzig!) Jahre, nachdem ich meinen ersten Film machte – dabei bin! Poznan | PL; Wien | AT · 1977–2026 (Portrait re. unt.: © LNP · © PP · # 3808 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ich begann 1977 in Poznan, Polen, Animationsfilme zu machen, das Foto rechts oben zeigt mich bei einem Interview im polnischen Fernsehen – mein allererster Film OBUWIE gewann international einige Preise bei Filmfestivals. Im Jahr 1977 studierte ich im Rahmen eines Studienaufenthaltes in Poznan/Polen an der dortigen Akademie der bildenden Künste Grafik, insbesondere Plakatgrafik, die in Polen einen besonderen Stellenwert hatte. Bei einem vom dortigen Studenten-Filmklub veranstalteten Filmabend sah ich ein Programm mit Filmen des aus Schottland stammenden, in Montréal am National Film Board of Canada arbeitenden Norman McLaren, die er direkt auf blanke Filmstreifen gezeichnet und später in einem weiteren Prozess koloriert hatte. Ich war so begeistert, dass ich am selben Abend große Lust bekam, selber Filme zu machen, mit dem Filmklub Kontakt aufnahm und dort meinen allerersten Animationsfilm OBUWIE (Schuhe) produzierte. Innerhalb einiger Wochen zeichnete ich mit Filzstift auf A4 große Transparentpapier-Blätter rund 650 Zeichnungen, die mit einer russischen 16-mm Filmkamera in Einzelbildschaltung auf SW-Film aufgenommen wurden. Der Negativ-Film wurde selbst entwickelt, auf einer Wäscheleine zum Trocknen aufgehängt und später gemeinsam mit dem Lichtton auf Positiv-Filmmaterial belichtet. Der Ton entstand durch Rülpsen und Qietschen mit einem Luftballon, gemischt mit Musik.“

How time is flying by! I’m already in the final stages of my life! Cheerful and reflective reminiscences to mark the exhibition “FRAME BY FRAME – ASIFA Austria FROM 1985 TO THE PRESENT”, which opens at the Künstlerhaus on Thursday, 9 July 2026 at 7 pm, and at which I – almost 50 (fifty!) years after making my first film – will be present! Poznań | PL; Vienna | AT · 1977–2026 (Portrait, bottom right: © LNP · © PP · # 3808 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) I began making animated films in Poznan, Poland, in 1977; the photo top right shows me during an interview on Polish television – my very first film, *OBUWIE*, won several international awards at film festivals. In 1977, as part of a study visit to Poznań, Poland, I studied graphic design – particularly poster design, which held a special status in Poland – at the local Academy of Fine Arts. At a film evening organised by the local student film club, I saw a programme of films by Norman McLaren, a Scottish-born filmmaker working at the National Film Board of Canada in Montréal, which he had drawn directly onto bare film strips and later coloured in a separate process. I was so enthralled that, that very evening, I felt a strong urge to make films myself; I got in touch with the film club and produced my very first animated film there, *OBUWIE* (Shoes). Within a few weeks, I drew around 650 drawings with a felt-tip pen on large A4 sheets of tracing paper, which were filmed frame by frame on black-and-white film using a Russian 16-mm film camera. I developed the negative film myself, hung it up on a washing line to dry, and later exposed it onto positive film stock together with the sound track. The sound was created by burping and squeaking with a balloon, mixed with music.”
