Wo und wie „materialisieren“ sich die MIND BUBBLES von Erwin Wurm? Feldbach, Wien | AT · 2024–2025 (Werke © Erwin Wurm, Ausstellungsansichten © PP · # 3437 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) In der Retrospektive zum 70. Geburtstag von Erwin Wurm in der ALBERTINA modern (nur noch bis 9. März) traf ich auf einige Skulpturen seiner Werkserie MIND BUBBLES, die ich in Teilen bzw. in unfertigem Zustand im vorigen Jahr Ende August gesehen hatte: Im Rahmen einer vom Belvedere 21 veranstalteten Exkursion zu den Häusern von Walter Pichler im Burgenland war es möglich, auch die Kunstgießerei Loderer zu besuchen und Einblick in die Produktion zu bekommen. Die Künstlerin Angelika Loderer, eine ehemalige Studentin von Erwin Wurm, führte gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater durch den Betrieb, in dem Werke zahlreicher Künstler*innen gegossen werden, und sprach über ihre eigenen Arbeiten und deren Entstehung. Vereinfacht dargestellt werden zum Metallguss vorgesehene Skulpturen zuerst aus Gips oder vergleichbarem Material (oft mit Metallkern) geformt und davon Silkon- und Gipsformen hergestellt, der Hohlraum der Gipsform wird mit Wachs ausgegossen. Die Wachsform wird in Kästen mit hitzebeständigem Sand umkleidet. In Öfen wird das Wachs zum Schmelzen gebracht und fließt ab, diese dünne Hohlform wird mit flüssigem Aluminium oder Metalllegierungen wie Bronze ausgegossen. Große Skulpturen wie die von Erwin Wurm werden in Teilen gegossen, diese verschweißt, die Schweißnähte verschliffen, die Skulpturen patiniert oder gestrichen, lackiert usw.

Just for the records: ich schätze Erwin Wurm und seine Arbeiten sehr, stehe ihm aber auch nicht unkritisch gegenüber. Aber allen, die sich – wie in Österreich bei erfolgreichen Künstler*innen üblich – ihm und seinem Werk gegenüber hämisch und herablassend äußern, kann ich nur entgegenhalten: „Gern selber machen, Freund*innen!“

„MIND BUBBLES: Am Anfang jedes künstlerischen Gestaltungsprozesses steht die Idee und mit ihr der Gedanke. Die visuelle Darstellung des Denkprozesses - die Frage also, wie die abstrakte Natur des Gedankens in eine objekthafte Form gegossen werden kann - spielt auch im Schaffen Erwin Wurms eine zentrale Rolle. In der Werkgruppe der Mind Bubbles materialisiert sich der gegenstandslose Gedanke in skulpturaler Form, eine große Gedankenblase sitzt direkt auf langgezogenen dünnen Beinen. Die comicartig anmutenden Figuren verleihen dem abstrakten Gebilde des Gedankens Substanz. Den Gedanken werden buchstäblich Beine gemacht, weshalb Wurms Figuren auch als künstlerischer Ausdruck der Dynamik des menschlichen Denkprozesses gelesen werden können.“ (Ausstellungstext ALBERTINA modern)

Where and how do Erwin Wurm’s MIND BUBBLES “materialize”? Feldbach, Vienna | AT – 2024-2025 (Works © Erwin Wurm, exhibition views © PP – # 3437 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) In the retrospective for Erwin Wurm’s 70th birthday at the ALBERTINA modern (only until March 9), I came across some sculptures from his work series MIND BUBBLES, which I had seen in parts or in an unfinished state last year at the end of August: As part of an excursion organized by Belvedere 21 to the houses of Walter Pichler in Burgenland, it was also possible to visit the Loderer art foundry and gain an insight into production. The artist Angelika Loderer, a former student of Erwin Wurm, and her father gave a guided tour of the company, where works by numerous artists are cast, and spoke about their own works and their creation. To put it simply, sculptures intended for metal casting are first formed from plaster or a comparable material (often with a metal core), from which silicone and plaster molds are made and the cavity of the plaster mold is filled with wax. The wax mold is covered with heat-resistant sand in boxes. The wax is melted in ovens and flows off; this thin hollow form is then filled with liquid aluminum or metal alloys such as bronze. Large sculptures such as those by Erwin Wurm are cast in parts, welded together, the weld seams are polished, the sculptures are patinated or painted, varnished, etc.

Just for the record: I greatly appreciate Erwin Wurm and his work, but I am not uncritical of him either. But to all those who – as is usual in Austria with successful artists – express themselves maliciously and condescendingly towards him and his work, I can only say: “Do it yourself, friends!”

“MIND BUBBLES: At the beginning of every artistic creative process is the idea and with it the thought. The visual representation of the thought process – the question of how the abstract nature of the thought can be cast in an object-like form – also plays a central role in Erwin Wurm’s work. In the Mind Bubbles group of works, the non-objective thought materializes in sculptural form, a large thought bubble sits directly on elongated thin legs. The comic-like figures lend substance to the abstract structure of the thought. The thoughts are literally given legs, which is why Wurm’s figures can also be read as an artistic expression of the dynamics of the human thought process.” (Exhibition text ALBERTINA modern)
