Wien | AT · 2024 (© PP · # 3069 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Das „Josephinum“, das Museum für Geschichte der Medizin mit den UNGLAUBLICHEN anatomischen Wachsmodellen hat mich schon während meiner Studienzeit an der Angewandten fasziniert – damals eher dunkel, wirklich „historisch“, mit dicht an dicht ausgestellten, feinst gearbeiteten Wachsmodellen – lebensgroße „sezierte“, geöffnete Körper und Körperteile, Frauen, Männer mit freigelegten Adern, Organen, teils geradezu elegant „hingebettet“ und ausgestattet mit Perücken und Perlenketten. Studienobjekte, die Joseph II. in Italien herstellen ließ. Seit etwa einem Jahr ist das Gebäude in der Währingerstraße sorgfältig renoviert, etwas labyrinthische Gänge, aber hell und gut gegliedert – mit völlig neuer Aufstellung der Artefakte. Im Erdgeschoß die Ausstellung zur Geschichte der Medizin – auch mit Berücksichtigung der grauenhaften Aspekte wie der Zeit des NS-Terrorregimes und der Euthanasieanstalt am Steinhof.

Im Josephinum war ich viele Male, habe dort schon vor 40 Jahren fotografiert und gezeichnet. Die Sonderausstellung DE AURIBUS (Über die Ohren) ist erst seit wenigen Tagen geöffnet, als ich das Plakat mit dem Anatomischen Ohrenmodell sah, wusste ich, dass das mein nächster Ausstellungsbesuch sein würde.

Vienna | AT – 2024 (© PP – # 3069 – www.ewigesarchiv. at) The “Josephinum”, the Museum of the History of Medicine with its UNBELIEVABLE anatomical wax models, fascinated me during my time as a student at the Angewandte – at that time rather dark, really “historical”, with finely crafted wax models displayed close together – life-size “dissected”, opened bodies and body parts, women and men with exposed veins and organs, some of them elegantly “bedded down” and adorned with wigs and pearl necklaces. Study objects that Joseph II had made in Italy. The building in Währingerstraße has been carefully renovated for about a year now, with somewhat labyrinthine corridors, but bright and well-organised – with a completely new arrangement of artefacts. On the ground floor there is an exhibition on the history of medicine – including the gruesome aspects such as the Nazi terror regime and the euthanasia centre at Steinhof.
I have been to the Josephinum many times and photographed and drew there 40 years ago. The special exhibition DE AURIBUS (About the Ears) has only been open for a few days, but when I saw the poster with the anatomical ear model, I knew that this would be my next visit to the exhibition.
