Vom KINO EBENSEE zu „time based media“ (und zurück). Ebensee am Traunsee, St. Jakob im Rosental/Šentjakob v Rožu, Wien | AT · 1960er–2015 (© PP · # 3635 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Aus Anlass des heutigen Drehbeginns einer neuen Dokumentation über eine Künstlerin, die ich schon lange kenne und sehr schätze, ein Kleinst-Rückblick auf meine Genese als „Filmemacher“. Es begann selbstverständlich alles (Kino- und Film-spezifisch natürlich nur) im Kino in Ebensee am Traunsee, formerly known as Ebensee, das gegenwärtig weiterhin tatkräftig betrieben wird vom Kulturverein Ebensee. Dort sah ich und brannten sich ua. im Laufe der Jahre folgende Filme ein: „Don Camillo und Peppone“, „Dick und Doof“, selten „Pat und Patachon“, dann die Disney-Filme „Schneewittchen“, die Micky-Maus-Filme (nicht Mickey-Mouse!), später auch Django Filme – mit unvergesslichen Sagern wie: „Hab keine Angst – Django ist ja bei Dir!“ und: „Django hasst Ungerechtigkeit!“ – nachdem er das im Sarg mitgezogene Maschinengewehr ausgepackt hatte und die Bande der Bösewichte umgelegt hatte! Franco Nero als Django! Diese und viele andere Filme gesehen im links unten abgebildeten Kino in Ebensee, das eigentlich das große Bild sein sollte, aber hier in die kleine Reihe treten musste – weil groß, ganz groß nur der ohne Zweifel weltschönste KINO-Schriftzug sein kann: KINO in Holzlatten gestaltet auf einer Holzhütte in St. Jakob im Rosental/Šentjakob v Rožu Ende der 1970-er Jahre von mir dortselbst gesehen und zum Glück, zu meiner großen Freude, damals fotografiert! Danke Danke Danke! Hier wäre der Platz für weitere Agglomerationen und Reminiszenzen, aber weil ich noch eine Videoclips zur Vorbereitung auf den heutigen Dreh anschauen möchte etc hier nur noch Kurznotate zu den Bildern in der unteren Reihe:

Das KINO EBENSEE; die Eumig Normal-8 mm Kamera, mit der ich meine ersten Filme drehte; der 35 mm Projektor im KINO Ebensee; Konrad Wallinger, Künstler, Filmvorführer und mit seinem leider verstorbenen Bruder Konrad lange Jahre Mastermind des Kulturvereins Ebensee, justiert den Beamer, der schon längst den 35 mm Projektor abgelöst hat.

Time-based media refers to art that unfolds over a specific duration and includes works like video, film, audio, and computer-based art. These artworks are experienced over time, unlike static mediums such as painting or sculpture. Preserving time-based media poses significant challenges due to the rapid obsolescence of technology and the need for complex conservation efforts.

Time-based media is a term coined by museum conservators for durational works of art that unfold over a period of time.This work often relies on technology, but includes mediums such as performance art and social practice. In the late 1990s, various institutions and organizations started forming think-tanks and working groups to develop standard practices for the acquisition, analysis, and care for these works over time.

From KINO EBENSEE to ‘time-based media’ (and back again). Ebensee am Traunsee, St. Jakob im Rosental/Šentjakob v Rožu, Vienna | AT · 1960s–2015 (© PP · # 3635 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) On the occasion of today’s start of filming for a new documentary about an artist I have known and greatly admired for a long time, here is a brief look back at my origins as a ‘filmmaker’. It all began, of course (in terms of cinema and film, naturally), at the cinema in Ebensee am Traunsee, formerly known as Ebensee, which is currently still actively run by the Ebensee Cultural Association. Over the years, I saw and was particularly impressed by the following films, among others: ‘Don Camillo and Peppone’, ‘Laurel and Hardy’, rarely ‘Pat and Patachon’, then the Disney films ‘Snow White’, the Mickey Mouse films (not Mickey Mouse!), and later also Django films – with unforgettable sayings such as: ‘Don’t be afraid – Django is with you!’ and: ‘Django hates injustice!’ – after he had unpacked the machine gun he had brought with him in the coffin and killed the gang of villains! Franco Nero as Django! I saw these and many other films in the cinema in Ebensee shown at the bottom left, which was actually supposed to be the big picture, but had to take a back seat here – because the only thing that can be big, really big, is undoubtedly the world’s most beautiful CINEMA sign: KINO in wooden slats designed on a wooden hut in St. Jakob im Rosental/Šentjakob v Rožu at the end of the 1970s, which I saw there myself and, fortunately, to my great delight, photographed at the time! Thank you, thank you, thank you! There would be room here for further agglomerations and reminiscences, but because I still want to watch some video clips in preparation for today’s shoot, etc., here are just a few brief notes on the pictures in the bottom row:
