Beitrag zur Ausstellung WASTE ART, Künstlerhaus Wien/Factory. Nov. 2020 bis Jän. 2021. Kuratorin: Ina Loitzl

Die CALSI*-Sequenz nimmt Bezug auf großformatige Bildflächen am Künstlerhaus Wien in den Jahren 2008 bis 2017 und umfasst die Themenbereiche Ökonomie, Ökologie und Kunst. Thematisiert sind u.a. Werbung, Bedarf und Bedarfsweckung, Überschuss, Sexismus, Entwertung, Verwendung von Kindern in der Werbung, Instrumentalisierung des Körpers und Sondermüll im Zusammenhang mit dem Finanzierungsbedarf eines von Künstler*innen getragenen Ausstellungshauses und der in diesem Haus präsentierten Kunst.

Wie manifestieren sich Kunst und Kapitalismus im sozialen, im öffentlichen Raum? Die Tableaux kondensieren die Bildwelten von Werbeästhetiken und präsentieren damit Ausgangsmaterial für zahlreiche Fragen – insbesondere nach dem Verhältnis zwischen Werbe-„Kreationen“ des neoliberalen Kapitalismus und „freier“ Kunst; diesfalls Kunst, die das Bestreben hat, sich unabhängig von Marktmechanismen und öffentlichen Einflussnahmen zu behaupten.

Die Transformation der gesamten Außenfläche und des öffentlichen Erscheinungsbildes eines Kunsthauses in einen Werbeträger für Klopapier, Bekleidungsfirmen, Elektronik- und Luxusartikel mit teils problematischen Produktionsbedingungen und Produkten, die nachhaltig Umwelt schädigen und massiv Müll produzieren, ist eine eminente Umdeutung des öffentlichen Raumes und hat potentiell mehr „Außenwirkung“, als die in ihm präsentierten Artefakte. Mit der CALSI*-Sequenz verweist Das Ewige Archiv als Langzeit-Projekt auch auf einen spezifischen Aspekt dieses Versuchs, „unabhängige“ Kunsthäuser durch Werbung zu erhalten: Die für Flächenwerbung im Außenbereich verwendeten Kunststoff-Folien sind nicht wiederverwendbar und de facto unverrottbar.

Material der für die Ausstellung WASTE ART entwickelten Tableaux sind Fotodokumente aus dem Bestand des Ewigen Archivs, das sich als „Enzyklopädie zeitgenössischer Wirklichkeiten“ versteht und von Peter Putz seit 1980 kontinuierlich aufgebaut und bearbeitet wird.

The CALSI * sequence refers to large-format picture surfaces at the Künstlerhaus Wien in the years 2008 to 2017 and includes the topics of economy, ecology and art. Themed are i.a. Advertising, demand and awakening of demand, excess, sexism, devaluation, use of children in advertising, instrumentalization of the body and hazardous waste in connection with the financing needs of an exhibition house supported by artists and the art presented in this house.

How do art and capitalism manifest themselves in social and public space? The tableaux condense the visual worlds of advertising aesthetics and thus present the starting material for numerous questions – especially the relationship between advertising “creations” of neoliberal capitalism and “free” art; in this case art that strives to assert itself independently of market mechanisms and public influence.

The transformation of the entire outdoor area and the public appearance of an art house into an advertising medium for toilet paper, clothing companies, electronics and luxury items with sometimes problematic production conditions and products that sustainably damage the environment and produce massive amounts of waste is an eminent reinterpretation of public space and potentially has more “External effect” than the artifacts presented in it. With the CALSI * sequence, Das Ewige Archiv, as a long-term project, also refers to a specific aspect of this attempt to preserve “independent” art houses through advertising: the plastic films used for outdoor advertising are not reusable and de facto rot.

The tableaux developed for the WASTE ART exhibition are made up of photo documents from the holdings of the Eternal Archive, which sees itself as an “encyclopedia of contemporary realities” and has been continuously built up and edited by Peter Putz since 1980.
