Hydra (altgriechisch Ὕδρα Hýdra) ist ein vielköpfiges Ungeheuer der griechischen Mythologie. Wenn sie einen Kopf verliert, wachsen ihr zwei neue, zudem ist der Kopf in der Mitte unsterblich. Ihr Hauch soll tödlich sein. Die Hydra wird auch als Wasserschlange bezeichnet, wovon sich ihr Name ableitet: ὕδρα hýdra bedeutet „Wasserschlange, Wassertier“ (zu ὕδωρ hýdōr, deutsch ‚Wasser‘). Hydra gilt als Tochter der Echidna und des Typhon sowie als Schwester des Kerberos, der Chimaira und der Sphinx. Sie wächst im Süden Griechenlands, in den schwer zugänglichen Sümpfen von Lerna in der Argolis auf, weshalb sie auch die Lernäische Schlange genannt wird. Sie pflegt aufs Land herauszukommen, Viehherden zu zerreißen und Felder zu verwüsten. Der Mythos um Hydra gilt heute als sprichwörtliches Gleichnis für diejenigen Situationen, in denen jeder Versuch einer Eindämmung oder Unterdrückung nur zur Ausweitung einer Eskalation führt, sie steht also für das, was man nur einzudämmen in der Lage ist, indem man es unberührt lässt.

Hydra (ancient Greek Ὕδρα Hýdra) is a multi-headed monster of Greek mythology. If she loses a head, she grows two new ones, and the head in the middle is immortal. Her breath is said to be deadly. The hydra is also referred to as a water snake, from which its name derives: ὕδρα hýdra means “water snake, aquatic animal” (to ὕδωρ hýdōr, German ‘water’). Hydra is considered the daughter of Echidna and Typhon and the sister of Cerberus, Chimaira and the Sphinx. It grows in southern Greece, in the inaccessible swamps of Lerna in Argolis, which is why it is also called the Lernaean snake. She used to come out into the country, tearing up herds of cattle and laying waste to fields. The myth of Hydra is now considered a proverbial simile for those situations in which any attempt at containment or suppression only leads to escalation, representing what can only be contained by leaving it untouched.
