Thaliastraße Revisited: EURO PIZZA in der PIZZA City. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery . . . Wien | AT · 1973–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Ich wundere mich ja selber, warum ich 1973 von der Haberlgasse im 16. Bezirk, wo ich damals wohnte, mit meiner Kamera ausgezogen bin, um dieses völlig banale Foto einer alltäglichen Straßenszene auf der Thaliastraße zu machen. War mir langweilig? Hatte ich an Andy Warhol-Filme wie „Empire“ gedacht? Egal – Heute, 47 Jahre später, freue ich mich über die Fotos, die ich damals gemacht habe, ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr davon und es macht mir Spaß, den SW-Fotos nachzuspüren und zu versuchen, aus ähnlicher Perspektive aktuelle Fotos aufzunehmen. Gut – einige Normal-8-mm SW Filme habe ich vor einiger Zeit auch noch digitalisieren lassen – More to come.

Den Spruch „Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery . . .“ hat mir vor mittlerweile etwa 15 Jahren ein Freund auf einen Papierstreifen geschrieben und auf den oberen Rahmen meines Computer-Monitors geklebt, es sollte mir helfen, von meinem damaligen Nachgrübeln über die scheinbar ungenützten Chancen und mögliche Fehlentscheidungen loszukommen und mehr in der Gegenwart zu leben. Ich bin ihm immer noch dankbar für die Hilfe damals.

Der ganze Spruch lautet: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” und wird Bil Keane zugeschrieben, einem US-amerikanischen Cartoonisten.

Empire ist ein Underground-Experimentalfilm und Dokumentarfilm von Andy Warhol. Er wurde in der Nacht vom 25. auf den 26. Juni 1964 im 16-mm-Format gedreht. Die Uraufführung fand durch die Film-Makers’ Cinematheque am 6. März 1965 im City Hall Cinema (Manhattan) statt. Der achtstündige Schwarzweiß-Stummfilm zeigt aus unbewegter Perspektive die oberen Etagen und die Spitze des Empire State Building in New York City bei einbrechender abendlicher Dunkelheit bis tief in die Nacht um 2:42 Uhr. Gefilmt wurde aus dem Büro von Henry Romney im 44. Stock des Time-Life-Building. Kameramann war Jonas Mekas, Co-Regisseur John Palmer. Obwohl mit einer Auricon-Tonfilmkamera gefilmt, wurde Empire ohne die dabei aufgezeichneten Dialoge zwischen Warhol, Romney, Palmer, Mekas und Gerard Malanga gezeigt.

Was I bored? Did I think of Andy Warhol films like Empire? No matter – today, 47 years later, I’m happy about the photos I took back then, I wish I had more of them and I enjoy tracking down the b / w photos and trying to take current photos from a similar perspective. Good – I also had some normal 8 mm b / w films digitized some time ago – More to come.

The saying “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. . . ”A friend wrote to me about 15 years ago on a piece of paper and stuck it to the upper frame of my computer monitor, it should help me to get away from my brooding back then about the apparently unused opportunities and possible wrong decisions and to do more in the present Life. I am still grateful to him for the help back then.

Empire is an underground experimental film and documentary directed by Andy Warhol. It was shot in 16 mm format on the night of June 25th to 26th, 1964. It was premiered by the Film-Makers ’Cinematheque on March 6, 1965 in City Hall Cinema (Manhattan). The eight-hour black-and-white silent film shows the upper floors and the top of the Empire State Building in New York City from a still perspective as it gets dark until late at 2:42 a.m. The film was filmed from Henry Romney’s office on the 44th floor of the Time Life Building. The cameraman was Jonas Mekas, co-director John Palmer. Although filmed with an Auricon sound film camera, Empire was shown without the recorded dialogue between Warhol, Romney, Palmer, Mekas and Gerard Malanga.
