Vertrauen ist gut, Kontrolle ist besser! Warten auf Stadt- und/oder U-Bahn. Wien | AT · 1973–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Das linke Foto ist eines der wenigen Farbfotos, die ich von den 1970-er Jahren habe – die meisten anderen sind Schwarz-Weiß. Es ist Teil einer Serie zur sozialen Lage in Wien, die ich auf Ersuchen eines Kollegen in der Sozialakademie, die ich von 1973–1975 besuchte, aufgenommen hatte. Igor D., der damals in der Bahnhofsmission am Westbahnhof arbeitete, wollte Diavorträge zur Situation halten und hatte viel Einblick in bestimmte Randbereiche des Lebens – ich war (und bin nach wie vor) ebenfalls sehr interessiert an der „sozialen Basis“, wir ergänzten einander gut. Ich fotografierte Randbezirke, Fußball-Stadien, Würstelstände, öffentlichen Verkehr und vieles andere. Igor wusste von einigen „Pensionen“ in den Außenbezirken von Wien, in denen gegen hohe Beträge verwahrloste „Zimmer“ bzw. Löcher an „Gastarbeiter“ als Schlafplätze vermietet wurden. Die Fotos bzw. Dias mussten in kürzester Zeit entstehen: wir schlichen uns unbemerkt in einige dieser „Pensionen“ – ich fotografierte mit einer 35 mm Nikkormat und starkem Blitz (und war ziemlich aufgeregt). Die meisten Aufnahmen habe ich ihm damals übergegeben, ich behielt mir nur die „Ausschuss-Dias“, mit denen ich jetzt weiterarbeite im Ewigen Archiv. Das Foto des „Schwarzkapplers“, also des Fahrschein-Kontrollors, der in der damaligen Stadtbahn-Station NUSSDORFER STRASSE wartet, ist eines davon. Im Vordergrund zwei der roten Stadtbahnwaggons, im Hintergrund eine Plakatwand: „Ich bin der Hoover Sauglöwe mit löwenstarker Saugkraft. Die gute Wahl HOOVER“. Auf der Trasse der früheren Stadtbahn fährt jetzt die U-Bahnlinie U6, die Station wurde renoviert, die Kontrolle wurde mit Überwachungskameras erweitert, die Wartenden tragen Masken und schauen auf ihre Mobil-Telefone. Immerhin: die Werbe-Plakatwände sind weg!

„Die Wiener Stadtbahn, auch als Wiener Stadt- und Verbindungsbahn bezeichnet, war ein 1898 eröffnetes öffentliches Nahverkehrsmittel in der österreichischen Hauptstadt Wien und ihrer Umgebung. Ihr 37,918 Kilometer langes engeres Netz bestand aus sechs Einzelstrecken, namentlich der Oberen Wientallinie, der Unteren Wientallinie, der Donaukanallinie, der Gürtellinie, dem Verbindungsbogen und der Vorortelinie.

„Vertrauen ist gut, Kontrolle ist besser!“ ist eine Redewendung, die dem russischen Politiker Lenin zugeschrieben wird. Sie will besagen, man soll sich nur auf das verlassen, was man nachgeprüft hat. Der Ausspruch ist in seinen Werken nicht vorhanden und kann deshalb auch nicht belegt werden. Belegt dagegen ist, dass Lenin sehr häufig das russische Sprichwort „Vertraue, aber prüfe nach“ (russisch Доверяй, но проверяй – Dowerjai, no prowerjai) gebraucht hat. Man nimmt an, dass dieses Sprichwort in manchen Übersetzungen von Lenins Texten leicht abgewandelt wurde, da das russische Wort prowerjai auch mit „kontrollieren“ statt mit „prüfen“ übersetzt werden kann.

It is part of a series on the social situation in Vienna that I recorded at the request of a colleague at the Social Academy, which I attended from 1973–1975. Igor D., who was working in the Bahnhofsmission at Westbahnhof at the time, wanted to give slide shows on the situation and had a lot of insight into certain peripheral areas of life – I was (and still am) very interested in the “social basis”, we complemented each other Well. I photographed outskirts, soccer stadiums, sausage stands, public transport and many other things. Igor knew of some “pensions” in the outskirts of Vienna, in which neglected “rooms” or holes were rented to “guest workers” as beds for large sums. The photos or slides had to be taken in a very short time: we sneaked into some of these “guest houses” unnoticed – I took photos with a 35 mm Nikkormat and a strong flash (and was quite excited). I gave most of the recordings to him at that time, I only kept the “committee slides” that I now continue to work with in the Eternal Archive. The photo of the “Schwarzkappler”, the ticket inspector waiting in the NUSSDORFER STRASSE tram station at the time, is one of them. In the foreground two of the red light rail cars, in the background a billboard: “I am the Hoover sucking lion with powerful suction. The good choice HOOVER ”. The underground line U6 now runs on the route of the former light rail, the station has been renovated, surveillance cameras have been added, the waiting people wear masks and check their cell phones. After all: the advertising billboards are gone!

“The Wiener Stadtbahn, also known as the Vienna City and Connection Railway, was a public transport system opened in 1898 in the Austrian capital Vienna and its surroundings. Its 37.918 kilometers long, narrow network consisted of six individual routes, namely the Upper Wiental Line, the Lower Wiental Line, the Danube Canal Line, the Belt Line, the connecting arc and the suburb line.

“Trust is good, control is better!” Is a phrase attributed to the Russian politician Lenin. It means that you should only rely on what you have checked. The saying does not exist in his works and therefore cannot be substantiated. However, it is documented that Lenin used the Russian proverb “Trust, but check” (Russian Доверяй, но проверяй – Dowerjai, no prowerjai) very often. It is believed that this proverb was slightly modified in some translations of Lenin’s texts, since the Russian word prowerjai can also be translated as “control” instead of “check”.
