Revisiting Palais Liechtenstein, vormals Museum moderner Kunst – den Ort der ersten großen Ewiges Archiv Ausstellung. After all those years! Wien | AT · 1988–2026 (SW-Fotos © Brigitte L. Roth © PP · # 3750 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Aus Anlass der Sonderausstellung 2026 „NOBLE BEGIERDEN. EINE GESCHICHTE DES EUROPÄISCHEN KUNSTMARKTS“ besuchte ich nach vielen Jahren wieder das dafür geöffnete Palais Liechtenstein im 9. Bezirk in Wien, das sonst – weil Privatbesitz derer von Liechtenstein – nicht öffentlich zugänglich ist. Selbstverständlich dachte ich dabei an die erste Ausstellung meines Projektes „Das Ewige Archiv“, die im Mai 1988 im Museum moderner Kunst im Palais Liechtenstein stattfand, das von 1979 an die Sammlung des Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts aus dem 20er Haus beherbergte. Seit der Betriebsaufnahme im Palais nannte sich die Sammlung Museum moderner Kunst (seit 1991 Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien); 2001 übersiedelte das MUMOK in das neu errichtete MuseumsQuartier.

Eingeladen zur Ausstellung hatte mich Dieter Schrage, der neben Lorand Hegyi Co-Direktor und Kurator des Museums war. Bei der Ausstellungseröffnung war auch die Premiere von zweien meiner Animationsfilme: „Gelati per tutti“ und „TV Montezuma“. Die 16-mm Filme wurden als Videos auf einem großen TV-Monitor gezeigt: s. großes SW-Foto links. Der Typ im Anzug bin ich selbst. Zur Ausstellungseröffnung waren überraschend viele Besucher*innen gekommen.

Vom 26. April 1979 an mietete das seit 1962 im so genannten 20er Haus untergebrachte Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts, ein Bundesmuseum, das Palais als neues Haupthaus; das 20er Haus wurde als Dependance weitergeführt. Seit der Betriebsaufnahme im Palais nannte sich die Sammlung Museum moderner Kunst (seit 1991 Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien); 2001 übersiedelte das MUMOK in das neu errichtete MuseumsQuartier.

A HISTORY OF THE EUROPEAN ART MARKET,” I visited Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna’s 9th district again after many years. The palace, which is otherwise not open to the public because it is privately owned by the von Liechtenstein family, was opened for the occasion. Naturally, I thought of the first exhibition of my project “The Eternal Archive,” which took place in May 1988 at the Museum of Modern Art in Palais Liechtenstein. From 1979 onward, the Palais housed the collection of the Museum of the 20th Century from the 20er Haus. Since opening its doors in the Palais, the collection has been called the Museum of Modern Art (since 1991, the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna). In 2001, the MUMOK moved to the newly constructed MuseumsQuartier.

I was invited to the exhibition by Dieter Schrage, who, along with Lorand Hegyi, was co-director and curator of the museum. The exhibition opening also featured the premiere of two of my animated films: „Gelati per tutti“ and „TV Montezuma.“ The 16mm films were shown as videos on a large TV monitor: see the large black and white photo on the left. The guy in the suit is me. A surprisingly large number of visitors attended the opening.

From April 26, 1979, the Museum of the 20th Century, a federal museum housed in the so-called „20er Haus“ since 1962, rented the Palais as its new main building; the „20er Haus“ continued to operate as a branch. Since opening in the Palais, the collection has been called the Museum of Modern Art (since 1991, the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna). In 2001, the MUMOK moved to the newly built MuseumsQuartier.
