Rat auf Draht – Wie eine Signation für das Kinderprogramm des ORF entstand. Wien | AT · 1991 (Artwork und Signation: © ORF · Animation, Fotos: © PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Eine „Signation“ ist ein animierter Titelvorspann vor einer Sendung, eine Art Cover, soll einerseits neugierig machen und zum Zusehen anregen, andereseits charakteristisch für die folgende Sendung sein. Markus Hanzer, der damalige Leiter der ORF-Grafik, fragte mich 1991, ob ich Lust hätte, eine Signation für die Sendung AM DAM DES des Kinderprogramms zu versuchen. Ich hatte und das Ergebnis gefiel – eine ganze Reihe von kurzen Animationen im Laufe der folgenden Jahre war die Folge davon. Zu der Zeit war fürs Erste der Reiz der 3 D Animationen schon bekannt und es gab Interesse für die etwas analoger wirkenden Animationen mit Stopp- und Zeichentrick, wie ich sie seit Längerem gemacht hatte – 1988/89 war ich ein Jahr artist in residence an der Concordia University in Montreal gewesen und hatte auch aus dieser Zeit eine Reihe von Anregungen mitgebracht. Von Anfang an wurden mir ideale Arbeitsbedingungen geboten: Ein leerstehendes, kleines „Szenarien-Studio“ mit Hebebühne wurde adaptiert mit M II Recorder mit Einzelbildschaltung, Kamera, massivem Stativ etc. In diesem Studio war auch eine 35 mm Oxberry-Animationskamera aufgestellt, in der Heinrich Landauer großartige Jingles – zB für die Filmsendung „Trailer“, für Panoptikum und viele andere Sendungen produziert hatte (gr. Foto re. im Hintergrund). Als Folge der Digitalisierung war diese Kamera seit einiger Zeit unbenutzt geblieben. Die Signation für RAT AUF DRAHT sollte für die das Kinderservice werben, und Kinder, die in schwierigen Situationen waren, auf die Möglichkeit der Telefonberatung aufmerksam machen. Ich versuchte also, in wenigen Sekunden eine Art Vorher-/Nachher-Situation darzustellen – in Verbindung mit einem Telefon. Mit Plastillin bzw. farbigem Wachs formte ich Flammen, Tränen, bereitete unterschiedliche Augen- und Mundpositionen vor (s. gr. Foto links unten) und nahm Bild für Bild mit den kleinen Unterschieden auf. Diese Art von Animation ist natürlich keine Einzelarbeite, sondern war nur in Teamarbeit in Zusammenhang mit dem Digitalstudio möglich. Den Schriftzug entwarf meiner Erinnerung nach Halmut Stiedl aka Helmut Modellskipper auf der Paintbox, die Aufkleber wurden von Karl Maier in der Printgrafik gemacht, die Fertigstellung der Animation erfolgte damals auf einem „Harry“, einer dedicated Hardware – das war kurz vor Einführung der apple Macintosh-Computer. Die Musik stammte vermutlich von Freddy Gigele. Mitarbeit im Szenarien-Studio: Matthias Kunert und Michael Hajek, der derzeitige Artdirector des ORF.

Vienna | AT · 1991 (Artwork and Signation: © ORF · Animation, Photos: © PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) A “Signation” is an animated opening title before a program, a kind of cover, should on the one hand arouse curiosity and encourage viewing, on the other be characteristic of the following program. Markus Hanzer, the then head of ORF graphics, asked me in 1991 if I would like to try a signature for the children’s program AM DAM DES. I had and liked the result – it resulted in a number of short animations over the years. At that time, the appeal of 3-D animations was already well known and there was interest in the somewhat more analog-looking animations with stop and animation, as I had been doing for a long time – in 1988/89 I was artist in residence for a year Concordia University in Montreal and had brought back a number of suggestions from this time. Right from the start, I was offered ideal working conditions: An empty, small “scenario studio” with a lifting platform was adapted with an M II recorder with single image switching, camera, solid tripod, etc. In this studio, a 35 mm Oxberry animation camera was also set up in which Heinrich Landauer had produced great jingles – e.g. for the film show “Trailer”, for Panoptikum and many other programs (large photo on the right in the background). As a result of digitization, this camera had not been used for some time. The signature for RAT ON WIRE should advertise the children’s service and draw the attention of children who have been in difficult situations to the possibility of telephone advice. So I tried to depict a kind of before / after situation in a few seconds – in connection with a telephone. With plastillin or colored wax I formed flames and tears, prepared different eye and mouth positions (see large photo below left) and took picture by picture with the small differences. This type of animation is of course not individual work, but was only possible in teamwork in connection with the digital studio. As far as I remember, Halmut Stiedl aka Helmut Modellskipper designed the lettering on the paintbox, the stickers were made by Karl Maier in the print graphics, the animation was then completed on a “Harry”, dedicated hardware – that was shortly before the introduction of the Apple Macintosh -Computer. The music was probably made by Freddy Gigele. Collaboration in the scenario studio: Matthias Kunert and Michael Hajek, the current art director of ORF.
