AT | FR | IT | UK · 1991–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Meine Studienzeit an der Angewandten war geprägt von Diskussionen um politische Relevanz von Kunst, um Stellungnahme zur Gegenwart und Geschichte, um Aktion, Aktivismus, Engagement. In den Vorlesungen wurde gesprochen, gestritten und diskutiert zu Realismus vs. Naturalismus, sozialistischem Realismus vs. Formalismus – durchzogen mit dem damals aktuellen Aktionismus der Mühl-Kommune (später: AA-Kommune – Aktions-Analyse) uä. Was ist relevant? Im Grunde hört diese Diskussion in mir nie auf – seit Jahrzehnten: Wie schaue ich mich um, wie nehme ich „Wirklichkeit“ auf – durch welche medialen und persönlichen Filter – wie stehe ich dazu, wie beziehe ich Stellung, wo schaue ich nicht hin? Punkt.

Malerei nach dem Nullpunkt

Ein schwarzes Quadrat, das auf der Leinwand einen weißen Rand übrig lässt: Das war der berühmte Avantgarde-Urknall, den Kasimir Malewitsch wenige Jahre vor der Russischen Revolution gezündet hat. Sehr früh im 20. Jahrhundert, nämlich schon 1915, hat Malewitsch diesen für damalige Verhältnisse ungeheuer radikalen Schritt in der Malerei gesetzt.

Mit Formalismusstreit wird eine Phase der Kulturdebatte Anfang der 1950er Jahre in der DDR bezeichnet, die, staatlich initiiert, eine klare Abgrenzung der DDR-Kunst vom „westlich-dekadenten Kunstbetrieb“ zum Ziel hatte.

AT | FR | IT | UK · 1991–2020 (© PP · Eternal Archives) My time at Angewandte was characterized by discussions about the political relevance of art, about the present and history, about action, activism, engagement. The lectures spoke, argued and discussed on realism vs. Naturalism, Socialist Realism vs. Formalism – interspersed with the then current actionism of the Mühl community (later: AA community – action analysis) and the like. What is relevant? Basically, this discussion never ends in me – for decades: How do I look around, how do I perceive “reality” – through which media and personal filters – how do I stand, how do I take a position, where do I not look? Point.

Painting after the zero point

A black square that leaves a white border on the canvas: That was the famous avant-garde big bang that Kasimir Malevich ignited a few years before the Russian Revolution. Very early in the 20th century, namely as early as 1915, Malevich took this enormously radical step in painting at that time.

The formalism dispute marks a phase of the cultural debate in the GDR in the early 1950s, which, initiated by the state, aimed to clearly differentiate GDR art from the “western-decadent art world”.
