Harddisc Made in Singapore. Geöffnet in Wien. Diesen Computer habe ich vor rund 20 Jahren gekauft – er war damals ein „Spitzenmodell“ – teuer wie alle Apple-Geräte. Ich kann mich nicht mehr an den Preis erinnern, aber Computer der Marke „Apple Macintosh“ haben grundsätzlich als „Alleinstellungs-Merkmal“ einen erheblich höheren Preis als leistungsmäßig vergleichbare „PCs“. Für Grafiker*innen und in bestimmten Bereichen Tätige scheinen diese Geräte jedenfalls unverzichtbar, sie bieten bestimmte Vorzüge. Ich denke, dass ich mit diesem Standgerät und angeschlossenem „Röhren-Monitor“ etwa 5 bis 7 Jahre gearbeitet habe – so lange, bis bestimmte für meine Arbeit notwendige Programme nicht mehr verwendbar waren: Es ist eine absehbare Folge von Entwicklungen: Computer brauchen, um grundsätzlich zu funktionieren, ein Betriebssystem – dieses wird verändert, weiterentwickelt seitens der Hersteller, die darauf abgestimmte Software muss adaptiert werden. Wenn bestimmte Leistungsvoraussetzungen nicht mehr gegeben sind, kann eine Zeitlang noch weitergearbeitet werden, allerdings können höhere Versionen der Software nicht mehr installiert werden – also: Neues Gerät muss her. Was passiert mit dem alten? Kommt auf den Schrank, ins Lager, steht herum – teuerste Produkte mit einer Benützbarkeit von wenigen Jahren.

Welcome to Sodom:

In ihrer Dokumentation "Welcome To Sodom" zeigen die Regisseure Florian Weigensamer und Christian Krönes, was mit den nicht mehr benötigten Handy, Fernsehern und Computer aus Europa passiert: Ein Großteil dieses Elektroschrotts landet in Accra im afrikanischen Land Ghana, wo die entsorgten Geräte von Erwachsenen und Kindern auseinandergenommen werden, die dabei giftigem Rauch ausgesetzt sind. Die Müllhalde Agbogbloshie trägt deshalb bei den dort lebenden Menschen den Namen Sodom.

Harddisc Made in Singapore. Open in Vienna. I bought this computer around 20 years ago – it was a “top model” back then – as expensive as all Apple devices. I can’t remember the price, but computers of the “Apple Macintosh” brand are basically a “unique selling point” and have a significantly higher price than comparable “PCs” in terms of performance. For graphic designers and people working in certain areas, these devices seem indispensable, they offer certain advantages. I think that I worked with this stand-alone device and connected “tube monitor” for about 5 to 7 years – until certain programs that were necessary for my work could no longer be used: It is a foreseeable consequence of developments: computers need to to function in principle, an operating system – this is changed, further developed by the manufacturer, the software that is tailored to it must be adapted. If certain performance requirements are no longer met, you can continue to work for a while, but higher versions of the software can no longer be installed – so: a new device is needed. What happens to the old one? Put on the cupboard, in the warehouse, stand around – the most expensive products that can be used for a few years.

Welcome to Sodom: In their documentary “Welcome To Sodom”, the directors Florian Weigensamer and Christian Krönes show what happens to cell phones, televisions and computers from Europe that are no longer needed: A large part of this electronic waste ends up in Accra in the African country of Ghana, where adult devices are disposed of and children who are exposed to toxic smoke. The Agbogbloshie garbage dump therefore bears the name Sodom among the people who live there.
