Pipilotti Rist und Bady Minck im MQ. Ein weiterer Versuch zur Daten-Archäologie. Wien | AT · 1998 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Bei einem meiner Aufräum-Anfälle vor einigen Tagen war ich knapp davor, einen Stapel Daten-CDs ungeschaut in den Plastik-Müll zu werfen, als ich darunter drei deutlich mit „Dimage EX 1998 > 2000“ beschriftete erblickte und spontan zurückbehielt. Mein Standgerät hat kein CD-Laufwerk mehr, auf einem Laptop ließen sich immerhin zwei der drei CDs zum Laufen bringen. Darauf ua. Fotos, von denen ich zwar eine Ahnung hatte, dass ich sie gemacht hatte, aber den Zusammenhang vergessen hatte. Wie öfters stelle ich mir die Frage: wie gehe ich mit gefundenen, „fremden“ Fotos um, wie mit eigenen, die mir aber fremd erscheinen? Zunächst musste ich die Daten einigermaßen aufbereiten, um damit arbeiten zu können. Frühe Digitalcameras hatten meist firmeneigene Datenformate, die mittlerweile nicht mehr lesbar sind, außerdem ist die Auflösung/Bildgröße der Fotos, die wie in diesem Fall vor mehr als 20 Jahren entstanden sind, im Verhältnis zu heutigen Smartphones geradezu lächerlich gering. Die Frau mit lila Perücke, die damals im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit stand, ist Pipilotti Rist, schon damals eine der bekanntesten Schweizer Künstlerinnen, links von ihr die Galeristin Gabriele Senn, auf den drei Fotos der oberen Reihe die Künstlerin und Filmemacherin Bady Minck, in der unteren Reihe legt Gerald Matt, der damalige Direktor der Kunsthalle seinen Arm auf Pipilotti Rists Schulter – beide in einer Baggerschaufel sitzend bzw. knieend. Der Ort der Handlung war jedenfalls das MQ-Museumsquartier, damals noch in weiten Teilen Baustelle. Den Anlass des Treffens habe ich vergessen – übrig geblieben sind also einige 100.000 Pixel, die ich nun zusammengefügt habe. Pipilotti ist mittlerweile vermutlich DIE bekannteste Schweizer Künstlerin mit einer Vielzahl von Installationen weltweit – in Wien sind zB im Eingangsbereich des Sofitel am Donaukanal und an der Decke des obersten Stockwerkes großformatige Bilder mit integrierten Videoelementen von ihr ständig zu sehen.

Nachdem ich das Tableau zusammengestellt hatte, habe ich Bady Minck kontaktiert, die ich schon länger kenne und deren Filme ich sehr schätze – sie hat eine Generation nach mir auf der Angewandten experimentellen Animationsfilm in der Klasse von Maria Lassning studiert (Studioleitung: Hubert Sielecki). Ich hab sie gefragt, ob ich die Fotos veröffentlichen darf – sie hat zugestimmt und mir ua. mitgeteilt, dass sie und Pipilotti Rist, die einige Jahre auf der Angewandten Gebrauchsgrafik studiert hatte (soweit ich weiß mit Stefan Sagmeister) sich oft getroffen und dass Rist ihre Super 8 Filme geliebt hatte und in einem späteren Interview sagte, sie hätte wegen der Super-8 Filme von Bady Minck mit Filmen angefangen, sei dann aber auf Video umgeschwenkt.

Bady Minck betreibt mittlerweile mit Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu die Firma Amour Fou, die seit Jahren höchst erfolgreich Filme produziert – ua. den Film Styx (Regie: Wolfgang Fischer), der vielfach ausgezeichnet wurde – ua. 2019: Österreichischer Filmpreis (Beste Regie (Wolfgang Fischer), Bestes Drehbuch (Wolfgang Fischer und Ika Künzel), Besten Schnitt (Monika Willi) und zuletzt beim Deutschen Filmpreis 2019 „Filmpreis in Silber“ Bester Spielfilm (Marcos Kantis)^,Beste weibliche Hauptrolle (Susanne Wolff), Beste Tongestaltung (Andreas Turnwald, Uwe Dresch, Andre Zimmermann, Tobias Fleig), Beste Kamera (Benedict Neuenfels)

Vienna | AT · 1998 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) During one of my clean-up attacks a few days ago I was just about to throw a stack of data CDs into the plastic rubbish without looking when I clearly marked three of them with “Dimage EX 1998> 2000 “Labeled spotted and spontaneously retained. My free-standing device no longer has a CD drive, at least two of the three CDs could be made to work on a laptop. Thereupon. Photos that I had a clue that I had taken but had forgotten the context. How often do I ask myself the question: how do I deal with found, “foreign” photos, as with my own, but which seem strange to me? First of all, I had to prepare the data to some extent in order to work with it. Early digital cameras mostly had their own data formats, which are no longer readable, and the resolution / image size of the photos, which were taken more than 20 years ago, as in this case, is almost ridiculously low compared to today’s smartphones. The woman with the purple wig, who was the center of attention at the time, is Pipilotti Rist, even then one of the most famous Swiss artists, on her left the gallery owner Gabriele Senn, on the three photos in the top row the artist and filmmaker Bady Minck, in the Gerald Matt, the director of the Kunsthalle at the time, places his arm on Pipilotti Rist’s shoulder – both sitting or kneeling in an excavator shovel. In any case, the place of action was the MQ Museumsquartier, at that time still largely a construction site. I forgot the reason for the meeting – so there are some 100,000 pixels left that I have put together. Pipilotti is now probably THE best-known Swiss artist with a large number of installations worldwide – in Vienna, for example, large-format pictures with integrated video elements of her are constantly on view in the entrance area of the Sofitel on the Danube Canal and on the ceiling of the top floor.
After compiling the tableau, I contacted Bady Minck, whom I have known for a long time and whose films I really appreciate – she studied one generation after me on the applied experimental animation film in the class of Maria Lassning (studio management: Hubert Sielecki). I asked her if I could publish the photos – she agreed and informed me that she and Pipilotti Rist, who had studied Applied Graphics for a few years (as far as I know with Stefan Sagmeister) met often and that Rist had loved their Super 8 films and said in a later interview that she had 8 films by Bady Minck started with films, but then switched to video.
