Peter Kubelka im Filmmuseum: eine Legende und ein Monument des Films. Wien | AT · 1988–2025 (© PP · # 3567 · www.ewigesarchiv.at). Vor einigen Tagen rief mich – völlig überraschend – Peter Kubelka, Filmemacher, Künstler, Mitbegründer und langjähriger Kodirektor des Österreichischen Filmmuseums, an und fragte mich, ob ich seine Einführung in das zyklische Programm 2025/26 „Was ist Film“ am 2. September 2025 auf Video aufzeichen wolle – er würde sich darüber freuen. Für mich nicht nur eine Ehre, sondern auch eine Freude – ich hatte selbstverständlich schon eine Karte reserviert. Der Abend selbst war wie jedes Jahr unglaublich eindrucksvoll, dauerte allerdings statt der üblichen zwei fast vier Stunden und das Drehmaterial zusammenzuschneiden, wird mich einige Zeit beschäftigen – aber: ich freue mich auf die Arbeit sehr. Peter Kubelka sprach ohne Pause – ich war nach den vier Stunden einigermaßen erschöpft – war allerdings mit zwei Kameras in der zweiten Reihe eingeklemmt und ordentlich beschäftigt.

Was mich noch wirklich freut und worauf ich dann doch stolz bin: Nach Ende seiner Einführung, als ich ihn fragte, ob ich noch einige Fotos machen dürfe, meinte er: „Herr Putz hat das beste Portraitfoto von mir gemacht!“ wobei er das SW-Foto links meinte, Das erste Mal fotografierte ich den Filmemacher Peter Kubelka (gr. Foto li.) 1988 nach einem Konzert mit dem von ihm gegründeten Ensemble Spatium Musicum. Auch die anderen beiden SW-Fotos dieses Tableaus sind dabei. entstanden. In der Secession war damals eine sämtliche Wände bedeckende Installation „Wall drawings. Continuous Forms with Color and Gouache Superimposed“ von Sol Lewitt zu sehen.

Die Farb-Portraits sind alle von der Veranstaltung im Filmmuseum am 2. Sept. 2025. Das Bild unten Mitte zeigt die Skulptur „Vögel im Flug“ von Étienne-Jules Marey, des Erfinders der Chronophotographie, auf die Peter Kubelka besonders Bezug nahm.

A few days ago, Peter Kubelka, filmmaker, artist, co-founder and long-time co-director of the Austrian Film Museum, called me out of the blue and asked if I would like to record his introduction to the 2025/26 cyclical programme ‘What is Film’ on video on 2 September 2025 – he would be delighted if I did. For me, this was not only an honour, but also a pleasure – I had, of course, already reserved a ticket. As every year, the evening itself was incredibly impressive, but instead of the usual two hours, it lasted almost four, and editing the footage will keep me busy for some time – but I am very much looking forward to the work. Peter Kubelka spoke without a break – I was somewhat exhausted after the four hours – but I was wedged in the second row with two cameras and kept quite busy.

What really makes me happy and what I am proud of is that after his introduction, when I asked him if I could take a few photos, he said, ‘Mr Putz took the best portrait photo of me!’ referring to the black-and-white photo on the left. I photographed the filmmaker Peter Kubelka (large photo on the left) for the first time in 1988 after a concert with the ensemble Spatium Musicum, which he founded. The other two black-and-white photos in this tableau were also taken at that time. At that time, the Secession was showing an installation by Sol Lewitt covering all the walls, entitled ‘Wall drawings. Continuous Forms with Colour and Gouache Superimposed’.

The colour portraits are all from the event at the Film Museum on 2 September 2025. The picture at the bottom centre shows the sculpture ‘Birds in Flight’ by Étienne-Jules Marey, the inventor of chronophotography, to which Peter Kubelka made special reference.
