Peter Kubelka, analog. Wien | AT · 1988–2021 (© PP · # 2221 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Peter Kubelka ist Filmemacher, gemeinsam mit Peter Konlechner Gründer des Österreichischen Filmmuseums (1964) und eine der zentralen Persönlichkeiten des internationalen Avantgarde- und Experimentalfilmes. Zwischen der Aufnahme links und den dreien auf der rechten Seite liegen 33 Jahre. Das linke Foto nahm ich im Jahr 1988 in der Secession Wien auf, nach einem Konzert des von ihm gegründeten Ensembles Spatium Musicum, in der Secession war damals eine sämtliche Flächen bedeckende Wandmalerei von Sol Lewitt. Die drei Fotos rechts machte ich vor wenigen Tagen im Anschluss einer Einführung von Peter Kubelka im Filmmuseum zum von ihm zusammengestellten zyklischen Programm „Was ist Film“. Alle Aufnahmen dieses Tableaus wurden auf SW-Negativfilm gemacht – also „analog“: im Jahr 1988, weil es zu dieser Zeit noch keine digitale Fotografie gab, im Jahr 2021, weil ich es adäquat fand, diesen Filmemacher, dessen Arbeit und dessen Vorträge ich seit langer Zeit besonders schätze und in dessen Werk die Materialität von Film, von Rhythmus und Struktur im Fokus steht, auch mit Film zu fotografieren. Außerdem wollte ich versuchen, eine Aufnahme in Relation zum Foto von 1988 zu produzieren. Beide Fotos entstanden mit einer Nikon Spiegelreflexkamera – allerdings war mir die Kamera, die ich vor 33 Jahren verwendet hatte, 2014 bei einem Studioeinbruch gestohlen worden. Nur der Pedanterie halber sei erwähnt (und weil analoge Fotografie bei „den Jungen“ derzeit wieder großes Interesse findet) dass ich links einen Ilford HP5 SW-Film mit 400 DIN verwendete, rechts einen Kodak TRI-X mit 400 ASA/ISO (Auch die Kennzeichnung der Filmempfindlichkeit hat sich verändert). Optik 50 mm bzw. NIKKOR 55 mm, f 1 : 1.2, ohne Blitz.

Es fällt mir nicht leicht, zu jemandem wie Peter Kubelka nach einem Vortrag hinzugehen und ihn zu fragen, ob ich ihn fotografieren darf. Ich übergab ihm vorher ein Tableau, das ich zusammengestellt hatte, worüber er sich freute. Da die Lichtverhältnisse im Kino des Filmmuseums selbst zu schwierig waren, bat ich ihn, für die Aufnahmen in den Vorraum zu kommen – das kleine Foto links unten entstand noch im Kino, eher zufällig, nachdem ich die Kamera ausgepackt hatte und „probeweise“ auslöste.

Über diese Zusammenstellung freue ich mich persönlich sehr – für mich ein „Timelapse-Tableau“ – also eine Zeitraffer-Aufnahme. Peter Kubelka ist mit 87 Jahren luzid und anregend wie eh und je.

I took the photo on the left in 1988 at the Vienna Secession, after a concert by the Spatium Musicum ensemble, which he founded. I took the three photos on the right a few days ago following an introduction by Peter Kubelka in the film museum to the cyclical program “What is film” that he had put together. All recordings in this tableau were made on black-and-white negative film – in other words, “analog”: in 1988 because there was no digital photography at that time, in 2021 because I found it appropriate, this filmmaker, his work and his lectures for a long time, and in whose work the materiality of film, rhythm and structure is the focus, also to be photographed with film. I also wanted to try to produce a picture in relation to the photo from 1988. Both photos were taken with a Nikon SLR camera – but the camera I used 33 years ago was stolen in a studio break-in in 2014. Just for the sake of pedantry, it should be mentioned (and because analog photography is currently attracting great interest again among “the boys”) that I used an Ilford HP5 b / w film with 400 DIN on the left, a Kodak TRI-X with 400 ASA / ISO on the right (also the The marking of the film speed has changed). Optics 50 mm or NIKKOR 55 mm, f 1: 1.2, without flash.

It is not easy for me to go up to someone like Peter Kubelka after a lecture and ask him if I can photograph him. I gave him a tableau beforehand that I had put together, which he was pleased about. Since the lighting conditions in the cinema of the Filmmuseum itself were too difficult, I asked him to come into the anteroom to take the pictures – the small photo at the bottom left was taken in the cinema, rather coincidentally, after I had unpacked the camera and released it “on a trial basis”.

I am personally very happy about this compilation – for me a “timelapse tableau” – a time-lapse recording. At 87, Peter Kubelka is as lucid and stimulating as ever.
