Mattuschka · Dokumentation © PP · # 2624 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Gestern konnte ich es abholen, das Portrait, das Mara Mattuschka von mir gemalt hatte, die Ölfarbe war nach einigen Wochen ausreichend getrocknet, ich hatte mich schon sehr darauf gefreut. Es war ein wunderbarer Abschluss nach vielen Besuchen bei ihr im Atelier, bei denen ich für sie Modell gesessen war. Die erste „Sitzung“ war im Mai 2022, insgesamt war ich sicher rund 15 Mal bei ihr. Das Bild ist ohne Fotografie-Vorlage gemalt, ohne Beamerprojektion, sozusagen ein „klassisches Portrait nach Modell“. Am Anfang die leere Leinwand, schnelle Skizze mit Pinsel, dann Schicht um Schicht. Bei manchen Sitzungen wischte sie Teile wieder weg, übermalte sie, begann stellenweise neu. Wie kam es dazu? Ich kenne Mara Mattuschka seit den 1980-er Jahren und schätze sie und ihre Kunst enorm – ich finde sie großartig. Vor Jahren hatte ich ein Bild von ihr gekauft und vor etwa einem Jahr den Wunsch, noch eines für die Kunstsammlung des Ewigen Archivs zu erwerben und dachte mir: „Vielleicht frag ich sie, ob sie ein Portrait von mir malen würde?“ (Das Thema „Ein Portrait von sich haben wollen, warum überhaupt?“ wäre interessant, sprengt aber den Rahmen dieser Zeilen). Ich rief sie an und sie war einverstanden. Ich freue mich total über das Bild – es ist viel, sehr viel Zeit darin eingeflossen, sowohl ihre, wie auch meine, es ist eine Markierung in der Zeit. Mara Mattuschka ist Malerin, Filmregisseurin, schreibt Theaterstücke und Romane. Ihre ersten Filme habe ich vor Jahrzehnten gesehen und fand sie sperrig, stark, nachhaltig, einprägsam. Sie studierte Malerei auf der Angewandten bei Maria Lassnig, Animationsfilm im Studio für experimentellen Film ebenda, das Hubert Sielecki gegründet und viele Jahre geleitet hat.

Sie war Professorin für „Freie Kunst“ an der HBK Braunschweig und dort Kollegin von Birgit Hein und Marina Abramovic und Lehrbeauftragte an der Kunstuniversität Linz. Retrospektiven der Filme von Mara Mattuschka liefen u.a. im EYE-Filmmuseum Amsterdam, in Barcelona, London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, in Wien, bei der Diagonale Graz, im Anthology Film Archives New York, in Tokyo und Rio de Janeiro. Im Oktober 2022 gab es eine Retrospektive ihrer Filme in Lausanne, ein Drehbuch für einen weiteren Spielfilm ist fertig, ein Roman in Arbeit.

Mattuschka · Documentation © PP · # 2624 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Yesterday I was able to pick it up, the portrait that Mara Mattuschka had painted of me, the oil paint dried sufficiently after a few weeks, I I was really looking forward to it. It was a wonderful conclusion after many visits to her studio where I had modeled for her. The first “session” was in May 2022, I’ve been to her around 15 times in total. The picture is painted without a photographic template, without a beamer projection, so to speak a “classic portrait based on a model”. At the beginning the blank canvas, quick sketch with brush, then layer by layer. At some sessions she wiped away parts, painted over them, and began anew in places. How did that happen? I’ve known Mara Mattuschka since the 1980s and appreciate her and her art enormously – I think she’s great. Years ago I had bought a painting of her and about a year ago I had the desire to purchase another one for the Eternal Archives art collection and I thought to myself, “Maybe I’ll ask her to paint a portrait of me?” (The subject “Wanting a portrait of yourself, why at all?” would be interesting, but goes beyond the scope of these lines). I called her and she agreed. I’m really excited about the picture – a lot, a lot of time has gone into it, both yours and mine, it’s a marker in time. Mara Mattuschka is a painter, film director, writes plays and novels. I saw your first films decades ago and found them bulky, strong, enduring, memorable. She studied painting at the University of Applied Sciences with Maria Lassnig, animation film in the experimental film studio there, which Hubert Sielecki founded and managed for many years.
She was a professor for “Free Art” at the HBK Braunschweig, where she was a colleague of Birgit Hein and Marina Abramovic and lecturer at the University of Art and Design Linz. Retrospectives of Mara Mattuschka’s films have been shown at the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam, in Barcelona, London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, in Vienna, at the Diagonale Graz, in the Anthology Film Archives New York, in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. In October 2022 there was a retrospective of her films in Lausanne, a screenplay for another feature film is ready, a novel is in the works.
