Paris | FR; Wien | AT · 1924–2023 (© Estate Man Ray © PP · # 2788 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Also gut, los gehts: gestern früh dann nochmals ins Videostudio On Screen, um den bereits fertiggestellten Film bzw. besser geschrieben das Video, das ich zu Reimo Wukounig gemacht und vor einer Woche schon als fertiggestellt gefeiert hatte, also: um dieses Video nochmals einen halben Tag lang gemeinsam mit Patrick Spanbauer / On Screen zu überarbeiten, da und dort zu kürzen, noch einen Frame wegzuschneiden, einen Text zu verändern, einen Titel hinzuzufügen und vieles mehr. Ist das Video jetzt (endlich) fertig? – ich hoffe, ich denke schon. Ich bin jedenfalls in gewissem Sinne fertig damit. Die Premiere wird am 9. Mai im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Reimo Wukounig – Schwerkraft ohne Gnade“ in der Alpen-Adria Galerie in Klagenfurt sein. Dann zurück ins Studio, um mit meinem Nachbarn Stefan Liewehr Gemüsesuppe zu essen. Am Nachmittag mit dem Rad bei Frühlingswetter in die Hauptbücherei der Büchereien Wien am Urban-Loritz-Platz mit dem festen Vorsatz, das famose besser: großartige Man Ray-Portrait Buch auszuleihen, das ich vergangene Woche dort durchgeblättert hatte. Ah – es steht noch im Regal – klar, schwer und groß. Ohh: neue Comicbücher bzw. Graphic Novels!! Also dann die auch noch: Nacha Vollenweider, Zurück in die Heimat (Nach sechs Jahren in Hamburg und einer gescheiterten Ehe entschließt sich Nacha Vollenweider in ihr Heimatland Argentinien zurückzukehren. avant-verlag, 2022); Tom Scioli, Jack Kirby. Um die insgesamt schweren Bücher zu transportieren, musste ich zwei Plastiksackerl kaufen (mit schönen Illustrationen von Sibylle Vogel!). Beim Aufsperren des Bügelschlosses dann bemerkt, dass die rosa Blume vom Bikefestival jemand von meinem Rad gefladert hatte, ein herber Verlust, gut, sie war dreckig, aber hat mich ein Jahr begleitet. Das nächste Bike Festival 2023 ist aber eh schon am Wochenende 15./16. April 2023. Um’s abzukürzen: heute Früh hatte ich dann einfach Lust, die Fotografie von Man Ray zu zeichnen – ich fand sowohl den Einfall von André Breton, ein Blatt Papier auszuschneiden und den Kopf durchzustecken ganz super als auch das Portraitfoto von Man Ray. Im Grunde hatte ich schon beim Hinauffahren mit der Rolltreppe zur Bücherei den Wunsch, das Man Ray-Buch auszuborgen, um einige Portraits daraus ab bzw. nachzuzeichnen. Das macht mir Freude und außerdem habe ich einen Mangel an Freund*innen, die sich von mir portraitieren lassen wollen.

„Der Dichter Andre Breton (1896–1966), Theoretiker des Surrealismus, war eine zentrale Figur in der Geschichte der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine erste Begegnung mit Man Ray fand im Juli 1921 statt. Als Angehöriger des Kreises der Surrealisten um Breton wurde Man Ray zum intimsten Photographen der Bewegung. Breton erkannte sehr früh, welche Möglichkeiten die Photographie der poetischen Sprache des Surrealismus bot, so in seinem 1928 veröffentlichten Roman Nadja. Im selben Jahr erschien auch seine Schrift Le Surrealisme et la Peinture, in der er Man Ray als einen Photographen lobte, der das Medium über die rein imitative Funktion des Realen hinausgeführt habe.“

Paris | FRI; Vienna | AT 1924–2023 (© Estate Man Ray © PP # 2788 www.ewigesarchiv.at) Alright, let’s go: Yesterday morning we went back to the On Screen video studio to watch the already finished film or rather the video that I made Reimo Wukounig and celebrated it as finished a week ago, so: to spend half a day revising this video together with Patrick Spanbauer / On Screen, shortening it here and there, cutting out another frame, changing a text , add a title and much more. Is the video now (finally) finished? – I hope so, I think so. Anyway, I’m sort of done with it. The premiere will be on May 9th as part of the exhibition “Reimo Wukounig – Gravity without Mercy” in the Alpen-Adria Galerie in Klagenfurt. Then back to the studio to eat vegetable soup with my neighbor Stefan Liewehr. In the afternoon, in spring weather, I cycled to the main library of the Vienna Library on Urban-Loritz-Platz with the firm intention of borrowing the famous better: great Man Ray portrait book that I had leafed through there last week. Ah – it’s still on the shelf – clear, heavy and big. Ohh: new comic books or graphic novels!! I had to buy two plastic bags (with beautiful illustrations by Sibylle Vogel!) to transport the heavy books fell off my bike, a great loss, well, it was dirty, but it stayed with me for a year. The next Bike Festival 2023 is already on the weekend of April 15th/16th, 2023 anyway. To cut it short: I had it this morning simply want to draw Man Ray’s photograph – I thought André Breton’s idea of cutting out a sheet of paper and sticking your head through it was great, as well as the portrait photo of Man Ray. Actually, as soon as I was going up the escalator to the library, I wanted to borrow the Man Ray book so that I could copy or trace a few portraits from it. That makes me happy and I also have a lack of friends who want to be portrayed by me.

“The poet Andre Breton (1896–1966), theorist of surrealism, was a central figure in the history of 20th-century literature. His first encounter with Man Ray took place in July 1921. As a member of Breton’s circle of surrealists, Man Ray became the movement’s most intimate photographer. Breton recognized very early on the possibilities photography offered for the poetic language of surrealism, as in his 1928 novel Nadja. In the same year he published his essay Le Surrealisme et la Peinture, in which he praised Man Ray as a photographer who had taken the medium beyond the purely imitative function of the real.”
