Die beiden Säulen vor der Karlskirche haben die Trajanssäule in Rom zum Vorbild, die 112/113 n. Chr. für den römischen Kaiser Trajan (98–117 n. Chr.) auf dessen Forum in Rom errichtet wurde – diese gilt als erste fortlaufende Bildergeschichte und daher in gewissem Sinne als Vorläufer der Comics. „Auf dem spiralförmig aufsteigenden Fries, der mit 23 Windungen eine Gesamtlänge von 200 Metern erreicht, sind Szenen aus den erfolgreichen Kriegen gegen die Daker in den Jahren 101/102 und 105/106 dargestellt. Insgesamt sind 2500 menschliche Figuren von etwa 60–75 Zentimeter Höhe abgebildet. Den Kaiser selbst kann man rund sechzigmal identifizieren. Die Darstellungen liefern interessante Auskünfte über die Kleidung und Waffen im 2. Jahrhundert. So zeigt sie unter anderem Bogenschützen aus dem Osten des römischen Reiches, Kataphrakte, Sarmaten, Daker. Man findet auch die Darstellungen der Donau-Überquerung und der Selbsttötung des Daker-Königs Decebalus. Die Wände weisen Spuren von Enkaustikmalerei auf, was auf eine ursprünglich farbige Fassung der Reliefs schließen lässt.“ (wiki)

„Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.“

The two pillars in front of the Karlskirche are modeled on the Trajan column in Rome, which was erected in 112/113 AD for the Roman emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) at his forum in Rome – this is the first continuous picture story and therefore in a sense as the forerunner of comics. “Scenes from the successful wars against the Dacians in the years 101/102 and 105/106 are shown on the spiraling frieze, which has a total length of 200 meters with 23 turns. A total of 2500 human figures from about 60-75 centimeters in height are shown. The emperor himself can be identified around sixty times. The illustrations provide interesting information about clothing and weapons in the 2nd century. For example, it shows archers from the east of the Roman Empire, cataphracts, Sarmatians, Dacians. There are also depictions of the Danube crossing and the suicide of the Dacian king Decebalus. The walls show traces of encaustic painting, which suggests that the reliefs were originally colored. ”(Wiki)
