Liebe in Zeiten des Gasanzünders und des Vierteltelefons. Langwies, Wien | AT · 1992 – 2013 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Als ich 1972 zum Studieren nach Wien kam, wohnte ich in der Haberlgasse in Ottakring in einer „echten“ Bassena-Wohnung, einer ehemaligen Schusterwerkstätte ohne Wasser in der Wohnung – eben mit „Bassena“ (= Wasserhahn und Becken) am Gang und Gemeinschafts-Klo ebenda. Es gab natürlich auch kein Telefon in der Wohnung. Zum Telefonieren gingen mein Mitbewohner und ich zu einer Telefonzelle mit Münzeinwurf. In diesen wurde eine Ein-Schilling-Münze eingeworfen – wenn sich am „anderen Ende“ jemand meldete, wurde ein dicker Knopf gedrückt, der Schilling „fiel“ und das Gespräch konnte beginnen – und konnte so lange dauern, wie Münzen nachgeworfen wurden. Einige Jahre später gab’s in der WG, die ich im Laufe von zwei Jahren mit insgesamt 27 wechselnden, teils recht illustren Mitbewohner*innen teilte (ich war der Hauptmieter) dann ein „Viertel-Telefon“: Ein Telefon konnte nur dann installiert werden, wenn eine Leitung („Litze“) im dicken, bleiummantelten Telefonkabel, das in der Straße verlegt war, frei war. „Viertel-Telefon“ bedeutete, dass man/frau sich diese spezifische Leitung mit drei anderen Teilnehmer*innen im Haus teilte – es konnte nur benutzt werden, wenn niemand anderer telefonierte. Vor dem Telefonat musste ein kleiner weißer Knopf am Telefon gedrückt werden, erst am folgenden Ton konnte erkannt werden, ob die Leitung frei war. Das Problem mit dem Viertel-Telefon in der WG war, dass es im mittleren Raum angebracht war – zu dem tatsächlich 4 (vier) Türen führten. Der Mitbewohner dort hatte – auch untertags – regelmäßig, oft und langanhaltenden Besuch seiner Freundin*nen – was also das Benützen des Telefons unmöglich machte. Gut – das war halt die Zeit der „freien Liebe“ und der Wilhelm-Reich-Bioenergetik-Seminare ;-)

Zeitsprung Ende der 1970-er Jahre: Der SUPERTRICK für Gratis-Telefonieren. Mit einem sogenannten „piezoelektrischen“ Gasanzünder konnte man/frau nachts in Telefonzellen mit Digitalanzeige des Guthabens kostenlos telefonieren: Der Gasanzünder wurde gedrückt, die Spitze an den Einwurfschlitz gehalten, losgelassen – und die Anzeige sprang auf 99 (Schillinge)! Bingo. usw. usw.

Zu den Bildern und Fotos der verschiedenen „Handies“: Ein weiteres Beispiel dafür, wie kurzlebig und wenig nachhaltig die Geräte sind, mit denen ich (und vermutlich andere auch) lebe. Ich habe immer noch kein „Smart-Phone“ sondern telefoniere derzeit mit einem „Samsung“-Klapp-Handy, das ich für unsere Mutter gekauft hatte, mit dem sie aber nicht gut zurecht kam.

Langwies, Vienna | AT · 1992 – 2013 (© PP · Eternal Archive) When I came to Vienna to study in 1972, I lived in the Haberlgasse in Ottakring in a “real” Bassena apartment, a former shoemaker’s workshop without water in the flat – just like “Bassena “(= Faucet and basin) in the corridor and communal loo ibid. Of course there was no telephone in the apartment. To call my roommate and I went to a phone booth with coin. A one-shilling coin was thrown into them – when someone called in at the “other end” a big button was pressed, the shilling “fell” and the conversation could begin – and could last as long as coins were thrown. A few years later there was in the flat, which I shared in the course of two years, with a total of 27 changing, sometimes quite illustrious roommates (I was the main tenant) then a “quarter-phone”: A phone could only be installed if A line (“Litze”) in the thick, lead-coated telephone cable, which was laid in the street, was free. “Quarter-Phone” meant that one shared this specific line with three other participants in the house – it could only be used if no one else was on the phone. Before the phone call, a small white button on the phone had to be pressed, only on the following tone could be recognized, whether the line was free. The problem with the quarter-phone in the WG was that it was appropriate in the middle room – to which actually four (four) doors led. The roommate there had – also during the day – regularly, often and long-lasting visit of his girlfriend – which made it impossible to use the phone. Good – that was just the time of “free love” and the Wilhelm Reich Bioenergetics seminars 😉
Time jump at the end of the 1970s: The SUPERTRICK for free calls. With a so-called “piezoelectric” gas lighter could you / woman at night in telephone booths with digital display of the credit free calls: The gas lighter was pressed, held the tip of the slot, let go – and the display jumped to 99 (shillings)! Bingo. etc. etc.
To the pictures and photos of the different “phones”: Another example of how short-lived and unsustainable the devices with which I (and probably others) live. I still do not have a “smart-phone” but are currently using a “Samsung” flip phone that I bought for our mother, but with which she did not get along well.
