Fritz Lang inszeniert ODYSSEUS im Film LE MÉPRIS (Die Verachtung) von Jean-Luc Godard. Capri, Roma | IT · 1963 (Filmstills © Studiocanal; Screenshots & Tableau © PP · # 3836 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Viele Jahre – um exakt zu sein: 63 Jahre – vor dem ultra-gehypten und beworbenen Film THE ODYSSEY von Christopher Nolan (den ich mir im Kino nur anschauen würde, wenn mir jemand € 50 bar auf die Kralle geben würde) ließ Jean-Luc Godard in seinem Film den großen deutschen Filmregisseur Fritz Lang („Metroplois“, „M – Eine Stadt sucht den Mörder“ uva.) in einer Rahmenhandlung, Regie führen in ODYSSEUS, einem Film im Film. Fritz Lang ist rechts in der 2. Reihe und darunter im großen Bild rechts, mit Hut zu sehen. Die Kamera führte Godards langjähriger Kameramann Raoul Coutard (rechts oben), auf der daneben zu sehenden Klappe ist sein Name R. KUTARD, also falsch geschrieben – natürlich beabsichtigt, weil es sich ja im Film um eine US-amerikanische Produktion handelt. Jean-Luc Godard, der selbst einen kurzen Auftritt als Regieassistent von Fritz Lang hat (4. Bildreihe, links, Godard mit seinem typischen Hut steht rechts unter dem gelben Sonnenschirm), arbeitete erstmals mit einem hohen Budget und einem großen Star wie Brigitte Bardot (2. Reihe, 2. Bild, 3. Reihe 1. Bild).

Die Eröffnungsszene musste nachgedreht werden: „Auf Geheiß des Produzenten Joseph E. Levine, der sich Sorgen um die Einspielergebnisse machte, musste Godard einige Nacktaufnahmen von Brigitte Bardot nachdrehen. Der Kameramann Raoul Coutard erinnert sich im 2002 geführten Interview für die DVD-Veröffentlichung des Films so: „Es war ein Desaster, weil Jean-Luc gezwungen war, einige Szenen neu zu drehen, damit die Amerikaner die letzte Rate zahlten; und Alain Levent übernahm diese Aufnahmen, da ich zu der Zeit an einem anderen Film arbeitete. Das geschah ganz am Ende – wir hatten die Farbkorrektur des Films bereits abgeschlossen. Wir hatten ihn an Sam Levine (Joseph E. Levines Spitzname) geschickt, und der sagte dann: ‚Nein, nein, so geht das nicht; ich will Bardots Arsch sehen.'“

Teile des Films wurden auf und in der berühmten Villa des deutsch-italienischen Schriftstellers Curzio Malaparte in Capri gedreht. Der Film gilt auch als Hommage an Fritz Lang und die Avantgarde-Architektur der Casa Malaparte. Ein Standbild aus dem Film – Michel Piccoli, die breite Steintreppe zur Dachterrasse der Casa Malaparte hochgehend – wurde 2016 für das offizielle Filmplakat der 69. Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Cannes verwendet.

Capri, Rome | IT · 1963 (Film stills © Studiocanal; Screenshots & Tableau © PP · # 3836 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Many years – 63 years, to be precise – before Christopher Nolan’s heavily hyped and heavily promoted film THE ODYSSEY (which I’d only watch at the cinema if someone were to hand me €50 in cash), Jean-Luc Godard featured the great German film director Fritz Lang (‘Metropolis’, ‘M – A City Searches for a Murderer’ and many others) direct ODYSSEUS, a film-within-a-film, in a framing narrative. Fritz Lang can be seen on the right in the second row and below that, on the right in the large picture, wearing a hat. The cinematography was handled by Godard’s long-standing cameraman Raoul Coutard (top right); on the clapperboard visible next to him, his name is written as R. KUTARD – that is, misspelled – which was, of course, intentional, as the film is a US production. Jean-Luc Godard, who himself makes a brief appearance as Fritz Lang’s assistant director (fourth row, left; Godard, wearing his trademark hat, is standing on the right beneath the yellow parasol), was working for the first time with a large budget and a major star such as Brigitte Bardot (second row, second picture; third row, first picture).

The opening scene had to be reshot: ‘At the behest of producer Joseph E. Levine, who was concerned about the box-office takings, Godard had to reshoot some nude scenes featuring Brigitte Bardot. Cinematographer Raoul Coutard recalls in an interview conducted in 2002 for the film’s DVD release: “It was a disaster because Jean-Luc was forced to reshoot some scenes so that the Americans would pay the final instalment; and Alain Levent took charge of these shots, as I was working on another film at the time. This happened right at the very end – we’d already finished the colour grading of the film. We’d sent it to Sam Levine (Joseph E. Levine’s nickname), and he then said: ‘No, no, that won’t do; I want to see Bardot’s bum.’”

Parts of the film were shot on and in the famous villa of the German-Italian writer Curzio Malaparte in Capri. The film is also regarded as a tribute to Fritz Lang and the avant-garde architecture of Casa Malaparte. A still from the film – Michel Piccoli climbing the wide stone staircase to the roof terrace of Casa Malaparte – was used in 2016 for the official film poster of the 69th Cannes International Film Festival.
