„Frau mit Pflanze“ in Unterdöbling meets „Frau(en) mit Pflanze“ in Brussels. Bruxelles/Brussels/Brüssel | BE; Wien | AT · 1954–2025 (© Nachlass Franz Hubmann © PP · # 3625 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ach – wäre ich doch ein richtiger, zumindest ein besserer Fotograf! Dann wäre das Foto rechts oben nicht so derart unscharf, so derart schlecht belichtet, dann wäre das Subjekt meiner abendlichen (fotografischen) Begierde nicht so am Rande! Die Frau mit dem Gummibaum (es IST doch ein Gummibaum, oder?) habe ich vor wenigen Tagen im Vorbeigehen, im allerletzten Moment fotografiert, entgegen der Bedenken, des Unwillens meines jugendlichen, mir sehr nahestehenden Begleiters, der nervös wurde, als ich ohne viele Worte zu verlieren im Gehen mein Mobiltelefon aus der rechten Hosentasche fummelte und er schon ahnte, woraufs hinauslaufen wurde. Ohne ihn über die Hintergründe zu informieren (ich weiß nicht einmal, ob ich diesen bescheuerten Pseudo-Foto-Klickton des „Handys“ abgeschaltet hatte), versuchte ich also starrsinnig, aus der Hüfte sozusagen, ein Foto zu machen. Natürlich wollte ich keinesfalls, dass die Trägerin bemerkt. Dies handelsübliche „Street-Photography“ – wie mir die auf den Zeiger geht. Aber DIESE Foto, das musste sein, da kann das meinem Begleiter so peinlich sein – mir völlig egal. Kurz nachher dann erzählte ich ihm, der mich dann auch noch über die möglichen Konsequenzen für mich belehrt hatte, die unerlaubtes Fotografieren von Personen nach sich ziehen könnte, auf mögliche Schreiereien etc, also dann versuchte ich gebotener Kürze, ihm die gedankliche Vorlage, den ideellen Auslöser meines zwanghaften Tuns zu verklickern. Klarerweise – wie sicher alle Betrachter*innen dieses Tableaus wissen, war die „Vorlage“ das Foto des Fotografen Franz Hubmann (1914–2997), das in einer Photo Auction mit ‘Ungewöhnlicher Pflanzentransport in Wien XIX’, Vienna 1954, betitelt wurde (s. unten), ein Abzug davon wurde um € 1.600 im Jahr 2019 verkauft. Mir gings natürlich NICHT um einen allfälligen späteren Verkauf meies stümperhaften Fotos, mit gings um eine Referenz. Dieses Foto von Hubmann wurde bei einer Ausstellung im MUSA im Jahr 2022 schlicht als „Straßenszene in Unterdöbling“ beschriftet.

Das Foto darunter entstand auch in Brüssel, am Tag nach dem nächtlichen Vorfall, diesmal war ich besser vorbereitet, hatte ich doch die Frau mit der Pflanze (das ist aber kein Gummibaum, oder?) schon von Weitem herankommen sehen! Deutlich besser – das hier abgebildete ist das letzte einer „Vierer-Serie“. Würde mich interessieren, ob Frau Hubmann (sicher mit Leica) an dieser Stelle nur eines der Frau mit dem Gummibaum im Kinderwagen gemacht hatte, oder auch mehrere. . . .

Then the photo on the top right wouldn’t be so blurry, so poorly exposed, then the subject of my evening (photographic) desire wouldn’t be so marginal! The woman with the rubber tree (it IS a rubber tree, isn’t it?) a few days ago as I was walking by, at the very last moment, despite the concerns and reluctance of my young companion, who is very close to me and who became nervous when I fumbled my mobile phone out of my right trouser pocket without saying much as I walked along, and he already suspected what was coming. Without informing him of the background (I don’t even know if I had turned off the stupid pseudo-photo click sound on my mobile phone), I stubbornly tried to take a photo from the hip, so to speak. Of course, I didn’t want the wearer to notice. This standard ‘street photography’ – how it gets on my nerves. But THIS photo had to be taken, even if it embarrassed my companion – I didn’t care. Shortly afterwards, I told him, who had also lectured me about the possible consequences for me of taking unauthorised photographs of people, about possible shouting, etc., so I tried to explain to him as briefly as possible the intellectual template, the ideal trigger for my compulsive behaviour. Of course – as all viewers of this tableau surely know – the ‘template’ was the photo by photographer Franz Hubmann (1914–2997), which was titled ‘Unusual Plant Transport in Vienna XIX’ in a photo auction Vienna 1954 (see below), a print of which was sold for €1,600 in 2019. Of course, I was NOT concerned with the possible later sale of my amateurish photo, I was concerned with a reference. This photo by Hubmann was simply labelled “Street scene in Unterdöbling” at an exhibition at MUSA in 2022.

The photo below was also taken in Brussels, the day after the night-time incident. This time I was better prepared, as I had seen the woman with the plant (but that’s not a rubber tree, is it?) approaching from a distance! Much better – the one shown here is the last in a ‘series of four’. I would be interested to know whether Ms Hubmann (surely with a Leica) took only one photo of the woman with the rubber tree in the pram at this spot, or several. . . .
