Die erstaunliche Flexibilität einer Skulptur von Xenia Hausner: „ATEMLUFT“ (2024) wird zu „ZEITENWENDE“ (2026). Mit wirklich sehr supernen Gruppenfotos! Wahnsinnig gut, oder? Sehr berührend, oder? Sehr wachrüttelnd, oder? Da bleibt zumindest mir komplett die Luft weg! War damals als temporäre Installation, als „Leihgabe“ oder was auch immer tituliert, wurde dann später wieder verräumt, es blieb jedenfalls eine Zeitlang eine Leerstelle im Heckenrondeau. Bad Ischler*innen und Tourist*innen mussten ohne eminente Wachrüttlung auskommen, ohne Bedenk-Skulptur, ohne Glanz, Gloria und Xenia. Vor einigen Wochen fiel mir dann ein leerer Betonblock auf inmitten der grünen Pracht, bald darauf ein in schwarze, edle Plastikfolie verpacktes Objekt – ah, was wird DAS denn sein? Gestern dann die Enthüllung via FB! Na Prack! Gasflasche weg, Uhr mit eingefrorenem „5 vor 12“-Zeiger her. Dazwischen sind sicher einige Flocken gefallen – die Bedenk-/Erweckungs-Plastik will ja gescannt, geformt, transportiert, abmontiert, neu ausgestattet werden, neu bedacht, ATEMLUFT-Flasche weg, umgebaute Bahnhofsuhr eingebaut, verpackt, transportiert, honoriert werden. Wer zahlt den redundanten Krapfen? Ahja – am unteren Rand des Beipacktextes steht’s ja eh: STADT BAD ISCHL, Aufbruch Salzkammergut, formerly known as „Salzkammergut2024“ und Raiffeisen Oberösterreich. So geht’s Freund*innen! Es ist eh wurscht, es ist wirklich alles wurscht.

Präsentation - Einweihung der neuen Zeitenwende Skulptur von Xenia Hausner in Bad Ischl
In Zeitenwende stellt Xenia Hausner den drängenden Krisen unserer Gegenwart eine unmissverständliche künstlerische Antwort entgegen. Mit zum stummen Schrei geöffnetem Mund, balanciert eine weibliche Figur eine leuchtende Uhr auf ihrem Kopf, ähnlich einer Weltkugel – die Zeiger erstarrt auf fünf vor zwölf. Die Zeit läuft ab.
Die Skulptur verdichtet einen Moment höchster Anspannung – zwischen Alarm und Erwachen, zwischen Verzweiflung und dem beharrlichen Drängen nach Veränderung. Sie ruft in Erinnerung, was auf dem Spiel steht: schwindende Ressourcen, ein Klima außer Kontrolle, die Erosion demokratischer Werte und die Würde des menschlichen Lebens. Indem Hausner den weiblichen Körper in ein Gefäß des Warnens und Mahnens verwandelt, verleiht sie dem kollektiven Unbehagen einer Welt im Umbruch Gestalt.
Ganz besonders freut mich das auch die größten Kritiker der Kulturhauptstadt anwesend waren .

Bad Ischl ist ohne „Atemluft“ - zumindest was die gleichnamige Skulptur von Xenia Hausner betrifft, die im Rahmen der Kulturhauptstadt am Bahnhofsvorplatz installiert wurde und zuletzt aufgrund der Finanzierung für Diskussionen sorgte. Heute wurde die Skulptur entfernt - und zwar dauerhaft! Die Hintergründe dazu gibt’s in der Ischler Woche!

It was initially described as a temporary installation, a „loan,“ or something similar, and was later removed. In any case, it remained an empty space in the hedgerow for a while. The residents of Bad Ischl and tourists had to do without a significant wake-up call, without a thought-provoking sculpture, without any pomp, glory, or Xenia. A few weeks ago, I noticed an empty concrete block amidst the greenery, and soon after, an object wrapped in elegant black plastic film – ah, what could THAT be? Then yesterday, the unveiling via Facebook! Well, well! Gas cylinder gone, clock with a frozen „five to twelve“ hand in place. A fair amount of money must have fallen in between – the thought-provoking/awakening sculpture needs to be scanned, shaped, transported, dismantled, re-equipped, reconsidered, the breathing air cylinder removed, the converted station clock installed, packaged, transported, and paid for. Who’s paying for the redundant doughnut? Ah yes – it’s right there at the bottom of the accompanying text: CITY OF BAD ISCHL, Aufbruch Salzkammergut, formerly known as „Salzkammergut2024,“ and Raiffeisen Upper Austria. That’s how it is, friends! It doesn’t matter anyway, it really doesn’t matter at all.

Presentation – Inauguration of the new „Turning Point“ sculpture by Xenia Hausner in Bad Ischl
In „Turning Point,“ Xenia Hausner presents an unambiguous artistic response to the pressing crises of our time. With her mouth open in a silent scream, a female figure balances a luminous clock on her head, resembling a globe – the hands frozen at five to twelve. Time is running out.
The sculpture encapsulates a moment of extreme tension – between alarm and awakening, between despair and the persistent urge for change. It serves as a reminder of what is at stake: dwindling resources, a climate out of control, the erosion of democratic values, and the dignity of human life. By transforming the female body into a vessel of warning and admonition, Hausner gives form to the collective unease of a world in upheaval.
I am particularly pleased that even the biggest critics of the European Capital of Culture were present.

Bad Ischl is without „breathing air“—at least as far as Xenia Hausner’s sculpture of the same name is concerned. It was installed in front of the train station as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations and recently sparked controversy due to its funding. Xenia Hausner, an internationally acclaimed artist, painter, and stage designer, addresses the social and existential problems of our time in her first sculptural work.
She observes the cynicism and lack of realism in the face of our dwindling resources with clarity and horror.
Her sculpture “Breathing Air” is a sensual image of despair, a struggle for what we need to live, a cry for what we are forfeiting. What remains? What do we lose? What have we put at risk? A touch – distant yet intimately close.
