Nordbahnhalle: It's All over Now, Baby Blue! Kurzes Lamento zum langen Abschied. Wien | AT · 2018–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Auf einer meiner Radtouren gestern auch dem Gelände des ehemaligen Nordbahnhofes im 2. Bezirk in Wien einen Besuch abgestattet, einem riesigen Stadtentwicklungsgebiet. Insbesondere wollte ich auch den Zustand der Nordbahnhalle besichtigen, die in den vergangenen Jahren Ort von Ausstellungen – zB. zur Stadtentwicklung, zu Fahrrädern – verschiedenen Veranstaltungen und mehrmals auch Ziel der CM – Critical Mass Fahrrad-Demos war (gr. Foto links). Im Juli 2019 war das Gebiet vor der Nordbahnhalle die Stelle, an der Thomas Holzinger (Kamera) und ich ein Interview mit Elke Krasny, Kuratorin u. Professorin Akademie d. bildenden Künste, für mein Video „Das Ewige Archiv · ordnen und geordnet werden“ aufgenommen haben (link s.u.) Elke Krasny berichtete davon, dass auch von diesem Bahnhof Jüdinnen und Juden zur Zeit des NS-Terror-Regimes in Konzentrationslager deportiert wurden, von der Bedeutung der Arbeit mit Archiven in diesem Zusammenhang und vom Projekt „Zukunft des Erinnerns“ bei dem Historiker*innen und andere Wissenschafter*innen zu den Deportationen forschen wollen.

Um die Zukunft der Halle, die auch Ort eines „Baulabors“ der TU Wien war, gab es einige Besorgnis, weil im Raum stand, dass sie den Plänen zur Stadtentwicklung im Wege stand. Am 10. November des vergangenen Jahres brach dann überraschenderweise und aus unklaren Gründen ein Brand aus – obwohl das Gebäude zu diesem zeitpunkt unbenutzt und der Strom abgedreht war.

Die „Zukunft“ der Nordbahnhalle ist jedenfalls jetzt geklärt: Gestern waren keinerlei Spuren davon mehr zu finden.

Dichte schwarze Wolken sind Sonntagnachmittag über der Leopoldstadt in den Himmel gestiegen. Rund 100 Feuerwehrleute konnten einen Brand in der Nordbahnhalle nach rund einer Stunde unter Kontrolle bringen. Berichte über Verletzte lagen nicht vor.

Vienna | AT · 2018–2020 (© PP · Eternal Archives) On one of my bike tours yesterday, I also visited the site of the former Nordbahnhof in the 2nd district in Vienna, a huge urban development area. In particular, I also wanted to visit the state of the Nordbahnhalle, which has been the location of exhibitions in recent years – eg. on urban development, on bicycles – various events and several times the goal of the CM – Critical Mass bicycle demos was (large photo on the left). In July 2019, the area in front of the Nordbahnhalle was the place where Thomas Holzinger (camera) and I interviewed Elke Krasny, curator u. Professor Akademie d. visual arts, for my video “The Eternal Archive · Organize and be organized” (see below) Elke Krasny reported that at the time of the Nazi terror regime, Jews were also deported from this station to concentration camps by the station Significance of working with archives in this context and of the project “Future of Memory”, in which historians and other scientists want to research the deportations.
There was some concern about the future of the hall, which was also the location of a “construction laboratory” at Vienna University of Technology, because the room said that it stood in the way of urban development plans. On November 10th of last year, a fire broke out surprisingly and for unclear reasons – even though the building was unused at this point in time and the electricity was turned off.
In any case, the “future” of the Nordbahnhalle has now been clarified: yesterday there were no traces of it.

Thick black clouds rose to the sky over Leopoldstadt on Sunday afternoon. Around 100 firefighters were able to control a fire in the Nordbahnhalle after around an hour. There were no reports of injuries.
