Donald Judd, EURO BOTOX 21 – formerly known as Stage Set. Wien | AT · 2023 (© D. Judd Estate © PP · # 2784 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Gut, wer wissen möchte, wie die Arbeit des US-Amerikanischen Künstlers Donald Judd (1928–1994) ausgeschaut hat, bevor sie mit Lack gefüllten Hochdruck-Wasserpistolen durch Texte und Tags wie EURO, R.CLUB, LOL, KING etc. bepisst wurde, dem/der bleibt natürlich noch ein Blick auf die Website des Ewigen Archivs, wo zumindest Fotos der Installation zu finden sind, wie sie nach der Renovierung 2018 ausgeschaut hatte. Dieses Objekt im Stadtpark beobachte ich deshalb schon länger, weil ganz in der Nähe ein Kinderspielplatz ist, zu dem ich mit meinem Sohn früher oft gegangen bin. Lange Jahre waren die bunten Kunststoffbahnen verblichen und unansehnlich, bevor diese Arbeit dann vor fünf oder sechs Jahren renoviert wurde.

Meinem Empfinden nach werden Kunstwerke im öffentlichen Raum und historisch bedeutende Gebäude und Denkmäler in Wien bzw. in Österreich öfter und massiver vandalisiert als in anderen Städten, die ich etwas länger kenne, wie etwa Amsterdam, Montréal, New York.

„Der amerikanische Künstler Donald Judd ist ein Hauptvertreter der minimalistischen Kunst. Für eine Ausstellung im Wiener Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) entwarf er 1991 das Objekt Stage Set, das der Stadt Wien 1995 geschenkt wurde. Judd spannte sechs verschiedenfarbige Stoffbahnen auf ein Stahlgerüst und installierte sie horizontal auf verschiedenen Höhen. Die serielle Organisation der Formen und ihre Schlichtheit korrespondieren mit der Einfachheit der Raumkonzeption. Durch den Rhythmus der unterschiedlichen Höhen der Farbflächen wird der Eindruck einer subtilen Raumgliederung erzielt.“ (Tafel in der Nähe der Arbeit)

Judd Estate © PP # 2784 www.ewigesarchiv.at) Good for those who want to know what the work of the US-American artist Donald Judd (1928-1994) looked like before it was filled with varnish high-pressure water pistols by texts and tags such as EURO, R.CLUB, LOL, KING etc. Of course, one can still take a look at the Eternal Archives website, where at least photos of the installation can be found, as they were after the Renovation 2018 had looked like. I’ve been watching this object in the city park for a long time because there is a children’s playground nearby, which I used to go to with my son. For years, the brightly colored plastic webs were faded and unsightly before this work was renovated five or six years ago.
In my opinion, works of art in public spaces and historically important buildings and monuments in Vienna and Austria are vandalized more often and more massively than in other cities that I have known a little longer, such as Amsterdam, Montréal, New York.

“The American artist Donald Judd is a major representative of minimalist art. In 1991 he designed the object Stage Set for an exhibition in the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), which was donated to the City of Vienna in 1995. Judd stretched six differently colored panels of fabric onto a steel frame and installed them horizontally at different heights. The serial organization of the forms and their simplicity correspond to the simplicity of the spatial concept. The impression of a subtle division of space is achieved through the rhythm of the different heights of the colored areas.” (panel near the work)
