Keine Ahnung ob sich meine Dinosaurier-Begeisterung“ nachhaltig auf meinen Sohn auswirkt – sicher bin ich jedenfalls, dass unser beider Leben eng mit Dinosauriern verbunden ist.

Gertie the Dinosaur ist ein animierter Kurzfilm des amerikanischen Cartoonisten und Animators Winsor McCay aus dem Jahr 1914. Es ist der früheste Zeichentrickfilm, in dem ein Dinosaurier vorkommt. McCay setzte den Film zunächst vor Publikum als interaktiven Teil seiner Varieténummer ein; die verspielte, kindliche Gertie führte auf Befehl ihres Meisters Kunststücke vor. McCays Arbeitgeber William Randolph Hearst schränkte später McCays Vaudeville-Aktivitäten ein, so dass McCay dem Film für die Kinoveröffentlichung eine Einführungssequenz mit Live-Action hinzufügte. Eine Fortsetzung, Gertie on Tour (ca. 1921), ließ McCay nach etwa einer Minute Filmmaterial fallen.

I have no idea whether my “dinosaur enthusiasm” will have a lasting effect on my son – but I am sure that both our lives are closely connected to dinosaurs.

Gertie the Dinosaur is an animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay from 1914. It is the earliest animated film to feature a dinosaur. McCay initially used the film in front of an audience as an interactive part of his vaudeville act; the playful, childlike Gertie performed tricks at her master’s command. McCay’s employer William Randolph Hearst later curtailed McCay’s vaudeville activities, so McCay added a live-action introductory sequence to the film for theatrical release. A sequel, Gertie on Tour (ca. 1921), was dropped by McCay after about a minute of footage.
