Der Lassalle-Hof, Tante Mitzi und Onkel Hans und ich. Wien | AT · 1977–2019 (© PP · # 3245 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Es gibt Themen, bei denen ich weiß, dass sie zu groß für mich sind, zu umfassend, zu viele Bedeutungen und Nebenwege in sich tragen: „Gemeindebauten in Wien“ ist eines davon. Darüber gibt’s zahlreiche Bücher und Filme – alleine der Aspekt der Februarkämpfe 1934, und die Beschießung und Belagerung durch Polizei und Militär beispielsweise des Karl-Marx-Hofes, des Reumann-Hofes, des Goethe-Hofes . . . Zu groß für mich. Das Thema interessiert mich außerordentlich, ich habe zahlreiches Material eingelagert, da und dort versuchte ich Zusammenstellungen (s. link) Aber die „via regia“ im Ewigen Archiv geht (meistens) über einen persönlichen Zugang – und den habe ich zunächst und vor allem beim „Lassalle-Hof“ im 2. Bezirk in Wien. Das SW-Foto rechts machte ich von „Tante Mitzi und Onkel Hans“ im Jahr 1977 – es ist für mich eine meiner allerliebsten und besten Portraitaufnahmen. Maria und Hans Deuwagner waren nicht „Tante“ und „Onkel“, wurden aber von meinen Geschwistern und mir zu Lebzeiten so genannt. Meine Großmutter Aloisia Promberger hatte Maria – immer und ausschließlich „Mitzi“ genannt – in Bad Schallerbach bei einem Kuraufenthalt kennengelernt, die beiden hatten sich angefreundet. Mitzi war aus „Böhmen“ als Dienstmädchen nach Wien gekommen und hatte später Hans Deuwagner geheiratet, einen Optikermeister. Nach wie vor berührt mich beim Anblick dieser Aufnahmen die ganz besondere Zuneigung der beiden zueinander, die auch bei diesen Fotos zum Ausdruck kommt. Sie wohnten im „Lassalle-Hof“, einem Gemeindebau des „Roten Wien“, in dem ich sie hin und wieder besuchte und in dem auch die SW-Fotos entstanden sind. Zugang zur Wohnung war von der Radingerstraße aus. Meiner Erinnerung nach schätze ich, dass die Wohnung rund 50 m2 groß war, Parkettböden, beheizt mit Kohleöfen.

Der „Lassalle-Hof“ wurde als Brückenkopf vor der Reichsbrücke im 2. Bezirk von den Architekten Hubert Gessner, Hans Paar und Fritz Waage geplant und 1924/25 aus den Mitteln der vom Stadtrat für Finanzwesen Hugo Breitner eingeführten Wohnbausteuer errichtet. Der Bau war Teil eines umfassenden Bauprogramms, das für die Bevölkerung menschenwürdige Wohnungen schaffen sollte – hell, trocken, mit Wasserleitung und WC ausgestattet waren sie ein krasser Gegensatz zu den „Bassena-Wohnungen“ in den Mietskasernen. Wesentlicher Teil der Anlagen waren Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen wie Bäder, Kindergärten, Waschküchen, Mütterberatungsstellen und Bibliotheken. „Der rote Hugo“ wurde von der „Christlich-Sozialen-Partei“ massiv bekämpft. Benannt ist er nach Ferdinand Lassalle (1825 – 1864), dem Begründer der internationalen sozialistischen Bewegung in Deutschland.

Die Fotos von Maria und Hans Deuwagner sind Teil eines „Serienporträts“, das ich 1977 aufgenommen habe: Mit einer 6 x 6 Rolleiflex (zweiäugig, mit 80 mm Planar-Optik) auf Stativ belichtete ich alle 12 möglichen Aufnahmen innerhalb einer kurzen Zeitspanne, ohne Bildausschnitt, Entfernung etc zu verändern. In den Jahren 1973 bis 1979 fertigte ich etwa 80 „Serienporträts“ in dieser Art an. Die Farbfotos entstanden zwischen 2017 und 2019.

Vienna | AT – 1977-2019 (© PP – # 3245 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) There are topics that I know are too big for me, too comprehensive, carrying too many meanings and byways: “Municipal buildings in Vienna” is one of them. There are numerous books and films about it – just the aspect of the February battles in 1934, and the bombardment and siege by the police and military of the Karl-Marx-Hof, the Reumann-Hof, the Goethe-Hof, for example… . Too big for me. I am extremely interested in the subject, I have stored a lot of material, I have tried to compile it here and there (see link) But the “via regia” in the Eternal Archive is (mostly) via personal access – and I have this first and foremost at the “Lassalle-Hof” in the 2nd district in Vienna. I took the black and white photo on the right of “Aunt Mitzi and Uncle Hans” in 1977 – for me it is one of my favourite and best portrait shots. Maria and Hans Deuwagner were not “Aunt” and “Uncle”, but my siblings and I called them that during our lifetime. My grandmother Aloisia Promberger had met Maria – always and only called “Mitzi” – in Bad Schallerbach during a spa holiday and the two had become friends. Mitzi had come to Vienna from “Bohemia” as a maid and had later married Hans Deuwagner, a master optician. When I look at these photos, I am still touched by the very special affection the two had for each other, which is also expressed in these photos. They lived in the “Lassalle-Hof”, a municipal building in “Red Vienna”, where I visited them from time to time and where the black and white photos were taken. Access to the flat was from Radingerstraße. From my memory, I estimate that the flat was around 50 m2 in size, with parquet floors and heated by coal stoves.

The “Lassalle-Hof” was planned as a bridgehead in front of the Reichsbrücke in the 2nd district by the architects Hubert Gessner, Hans Paar and Fritz Waage and was built in 1924/25 with funds from the housing tax introduced by the city councillor for finance Hugo Breitner. The construction was part of a comprehensive building programme designed to create decent housing for the population – bright, dry, equipped with water pipes and toilets, they were a stark contrast to the “Bassena flats” in the tenements. Communal facilities such as bathrooms, kindergartens, laundry rooms, mothers’ advice centres and libraries were an essential part of the complex. “Red Hugo” was heavily opposed by the “Christian Social Party”. It is named after Ferdinand Lassalle (1825 – 1864), the founder of the international socialist movement in Germany.

The photos of Maria and Hans Deuwagner are part of a “series portrait” that I took in 1977: Using a 6 x 6 Rolleiflex (twin-lens, with 80 mm planar optics) on a tripod, I exposed all 12 possible shots within a short period of time, without changing the framing, distance etc. Between 1973 and 1979, I took around 80 “serial portraits” in this way. The colour photos were taken between 2017 and 2019.
