David Hockney’s „California Copied from 1965 Painting in 1987“ von mir im Jahr 2022 versucht zu „kopieren“. London | UK; Wien | AT · 1987–2022 (Malerei © Estate David Hockney; Skizze und Tableau © PP · # 3802 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Das links als Repro gezeigte Bild malte David Hockney im Jahr 1987 in England, es ist – laut Titel – eine Kopie seines eigenen Bildes „California“ aus dem Jahr 1967. Es war im Jahr 2022 in der großen David-Hockney-Ausstellung im damaligen Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien (das es mittlerweile nicht mehr gibt – aber was macht das schon im Hinblick darauf, dass rund die Hälfte des Wildtier-Bestandes der Erde in den vergangenen 40 Jahren ausgelöscht wurde) zu sehen. In der Ausstellung war das Fotografieren verboten, darum ging ich mit Zeichenblock und Bleistift hin und versuchte, einige Skizzen nach den Bildern zu machen. Auch das wurde anfangs von den – an sich freundlichen – Aufseher*innen beeinsprucht. Da immer wieder viele Schüler*innen-Gruppen in der Ausstellung waren, wies ich die Einsprüche zurück mit dem Hinweis, dass ich selbst Professor an einer Kunstuni sei.

According to the title, it is a copy of his own painting “California” from 1967. It was on display in 2022 at the major David Hockney exhibition at the then Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien (which no longer exists – but what does that matter, considering that around half of the Earth’s wildlife population has been wiped out in the last 40 years)? Photography was prohibited in the exhibition, so I went with a sketchbook and pencil and tried to make some sketches based on the paintings. This too was initially objected to by the – otherwise friendly – supervisors. Since there were often many groups of students visiting the exhibition, I dismissed the objections by pointing out that I myself was a professor at an art university.
