Dan Grahams (1942–2022) „Rooftop Urban Park Project“ revisited. New York | US · 1995 (© PP · #2383 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Anlässlich eines mehrwöchigen Aufenthaltes in New York, als ich nach einigen Jahren Arbeit im Digitalstudio des ORF eine „Auszeit“ brauchte, besuchte ich auch die „Dia Art Foundation“ im Stadtteil Chelsea, in der damals ua. eine große Ausstellung zu den fotografischen „Notizen“ von Gerhard Richter zu sehen war. Das Dach des Gebäudes war frei begehbar, darauf eine große Glas-/Stahl-Konstruktion, in der sich die umliegende Stadtlandschaft reflektierte. Als ich heute früh in wikipedia las, dass der US-amerikanische Künstler Dan Graham verstorben war, sah ich Arbeiten von ihm, die mich an die Konstruktion erinnerten, die ich damals gesehen und fotografiert hatte. Tatsächlich: es ist eine Installation von Dan Graham!

„Dan Graham verwandelte das Dach der 548 West 22nd Street in einen kleinen städtischen Park für das Viertel Chelsea. Das Projekt war der Öffentlichkeit von 1991 bis 2004 zugänglich, als Dias Ausstellungsraum in Chelsea geschlossen wurde. Das Projekt umfasste einen großen architektonischen Glaspavillon, der von Graham in Zusammenarbeit mit den Architekten Mojdeh Baratloo und Clifton Balch entworfen wurde. Die aus zweifach verspiegeltem Glas gefertigten Wände des Pavillons wechselten zwischen transparenten und reflektierenden Zuständen, wenn sich die Lichtintensität änderte, und erzeugten wechselnde und komplexe visuelle Effekte mit dem Himmel, der umgebenden Landschaft und Interaktionen mit Menschen auf dem Dach. Das Projekt umfasste auch einen kleinen Schuppen auf dem Dach, der in ein Café/Videobetrachtungsraum umgewandelt wurde. Das Videoprogramm wurde nach von Graham ausgewählten Themen organisiert.“ (Dia Art Foundation)

New York | US · 1995 (© PP · #2383 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) On the occasion of a stay of several weeks in New York, when I needed a “time out” after several years of working in the digital studio of the ORF, I also visited the “Dia Art Foundation” in the Chelsea district, in which at that time among other things. a large exhibition on Gerhard Richter’s photographic “Notes” was on display. The roof of the building was freely accessible, on top of which was a large glass/steel construction that reflected the surrounding urban landscape. When I read this morning on wikipedia that American artist Dan Graham had died, I saw work by him that reminded me of the construction I saw and photographed at the time. In fact: it’s an installation by Dan Graham!

Dan Graham transformed the roof of 548 West 22nd Street into a small-scale urban park for the Chelsea neighborhood. The project was accessible to the public from 1991 until 2004, when Dia’s Chelsea exhibition space closed. The project included a large-scale architectural glass pavilion designed by Graham in collaboration with architects Mojdeh Baratloo and Clifton Balch. Constructed from a two-way mirrored glass, the walls of the pavilion shifted between transparent and reflective states as the intensity of light changed, creating changing and complex visual effects with the sky, surrounding landscape, and interactions with people on the roof. The project also encompassed a small shed on the roof which was converted into a cafe/video viewing room. The video program was organized around themes chosen by Graham. (Dia Art Foundation)
