Das umfangreiche und sehr eindringliche Werk des französischen Künstlers war und ist eine wesentliche Inspiration und Vorbild für Das Ewige Archiv. „Der Künstler als Archivar. Seit den 1980-er Jahren nimmt das Archiv im Zuge der erneuten Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte eine immer wichtigere Rolle ein, nicht nur als Ressource, sondern auch als zentrales Element der Arbeit selbst. Die Leidenschaft des Künstlers Christian Boltanski für das Archiv prägte seine Arbeit ab Ende der 1960-er Jahre; die Künstler der 1990-er Jahre kamen mit dem Siegeszug des Virtuellen und des World Wide Web dazu.

2009 theoretisierte der Kunstkritiker Dieter Roelstraete die wachsende Präsenz des Archivs in der Kunst und begründete sie mit historischen Begriffen. Er sah die archäologische Grabungspraxis als Vorbild für eine neue und vorherrschende Form der künstlerischen Produktion, in deren Entwicklung die Künstler der ehemals kommunistischen Staaten Osteuropas eine große Rolle gespielt hatten.

Dieses Fieber für das Archiv strahlte in den 1990-er Jahren weltweit aus. Hervorzuheben ist dabei die Bedeutung der libanesischen Fotoszene mit der Gründung der Arab Image Foundation in Beirut und die Arbeit von Künstlern wie Walid Raad und Akram Zaatari. Angesichts der zentralen Bedeutung des Schnitts für Video und Film haben auch diese besonders fruchtbare Felder für die Ästhetik des Archivs geschaffen.

The extensive and very haunting work of the French artist was and is an essential inspiration and model for The Eternal Archive. “The artist as archivist. Since the 1980s, the archive has played an increasingly important role in the course of the renewed engagement with history, not only as a resource, but also as a central element of the work itself. The artist Christian Boltanski’s passion for the archive shaped his work Late 1960s; the artists of the 1990s came along with the triumph of the virtual and the world wide web.
In 2009, the art critic Dieter Roelstraete theorized the increasing presence of the archive in art and justified it with historical terms. He saw the archaeological excavation practice as a model for a new and predominant form of artistic production, in whose development the artists of the former communist states of Eastern Europe had played a major role.
This fever for the archive radiated worldwide in the 1990s. The importance of the Lebanese photo scene with the establishment of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and the work of artists such as Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari should be emphasized. In view of the central importance of editing for video and film, these too have created particularly fertile fields for the aesthetics of the archive.
