Body-Building (Mont Real)

Die (Karton-)Muskeln ordentlich spielen lassen! oder: Warum mein Film „Mont Real“ nicht im kanadischen Fernsehen gezeigt werden konnte. Montreal | CA · 1988/89 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Um mich für die Präsentation meiner frühen Animationsfilme im ASIFAKEIL im MQ am Di., 21. Jänner 2019 um 18 Uhr (s. link) vorzubereiten, sichte ich Fotos, Dias und Filme aus den Jahren 1977 bis 1989, darunter auch zum Film „Mont Real“, den ich 1988/89 im Rahmen eines Aufenthaltes als artist in residence an der Concordia University in Montréal/Canada in Kooperation mit meiner Frau Barbara Putz-Plecko produziert hatte. In gewissem Sinne ist Thema des Films der sarkastische Blick auf eine „fremde“ Welt, eine streckenweise recht wüste Mischung aus Real- und Animationsfilm. Studio für die Innenaufnahmen und Animationssequenzen war ein Eck unseres Schlafzimmers, dessen Wände ich nach und nach immer wieder bemalte, viele Requisiten und Objekte baute ich aus den Kartonabfällen eines im Souterrain des Hauses befindlichen Möbelhändlers. Bei der in diesem Tableau gezeigten „Body-Builder-Sequenz“ trug ich als Muscle-Shirt verschiedene Plastiksackerl, insbesondere auch des Diskonters „Jean Coutu“ – etwa vergleichbar mit dem hiesigen Penny-Markt, die „Muskeln“ wuchsen aus überdimensionalen, wachsenden Kartonteilen, die ich mir auf meinen damals noch schlanken Körper kleben ließ. Am Ende der Sequenz war ich jedenfalls nackt, anstelle des Feigenblattes wechselten sich das kanadische „Maple Leaf“ und die Lilie, das Symbol der frankokanadischen Provinz Quebec ab. In der unteren Bildreihe sind zwei Filmstills der Bomben-Sequenz, auf dem Kartonteil wechselten großformatige Tuschezeichnungen eines animierten Bombenabwurfs, im Hintergrund die Fotokopie eines „Stealth-Bombers“.

Als der Film nach etwa einem halben Jahr fertig war, schickte ich eine 16-mm Kopie an das kanadische Fernsehen CBS. Einen Transfer des Film auf Video hatte ich noch nicht, damals war noch keine Rede von digitalen Files oder vom einfachen Verschicken eines youtube-links. Nach einiger Zeit rief ich bei der TV-Station an und sprach mit dem für diese Art von Filmen zuständigen Redakteur, der mir zunächst sagte, dass der Film an sich gefallen hätte und im selben Satz hinzufügte, man aber ihn nicht zeigen könne und würde. Auf meine Nachfrage, warum denn nicht, erklärte er mir etwas zögernd – Naja, das sei diese Sequenz, in der sich auf dem nackten Typ (er wusste ja nicht, dass ich das selber war) dasAhornblatt und die Lilie – beides also Staatssymbole – abwechseln würden . . .

„Mont Real“ ist einer der Filme, die in der Installation im ASIFAKEIL zu sehen sind – über die Produktionsbedingungen dieses und anderer meiner frühen Animationsfilme spreche ich am 21. Jänner 2020.

Let the (cardboard) muscles play properly! or: Why my film “Mont Real” could not be shown on Canadian television. Montreal | CA1988 / 89 (© PP · Eternal Archives) In order to prepare myself for the presentation of my early animated films in the ASIFAKEIL in the MQ on Tuesday, January 21, 2019 at 6 p.m. (see link), I sift through photos, slides and films 1977 to 1989, including the film “Mont Real”, which I had produced in 1988/89 during my stay as an artist in residence at Concordia University in Montreal / Canada in cooperation with my wife Barbara Putz-Plecko. In a sense, the subject of the film is the sarcastic view of an “alien” world, a sometimes rather wild mix of real and animated film. The studio for the interior shots and animation sequences was a corner of our bedroom, the walls of which I gradually painted over and over again, I built many props and objects from the cardboard waste of a furniture dealer in the basement of the house. In the “Body Builder Sequence” shown in this panel, I wore various plastic bags as a muscle shirt, especially the discount store “Jean Coutu” – comparable to the local Penny market, the “muscles” grew out of oversized, growing cardboard parts that I had glued to my then slim body. At the end of the sequence, I was naked, instead of the fig leaf, the Canadian “maple leaf” and the lily, the symbol of the French Canadian province of Quebec, alternated. In the lower row of pictures there are two film stills from the bomb sequence, on the part of the box there are large-format ink drawings of an animated bomb dropping, in the background the photocopy of a “stealth bomber”.
When the film was finished after about half a year, I sent a 16mm copy to Canadian television CBS. I did not have a transfer of the film to video yet, at that time there was no talk of digital files or simply sending a youtube link. After a while I called the TV station and spoke to the editor responsible for this type of film, who initially told me that the film had pleased itself and added in the same sentence, but it could not and would not be shown. When I asked why not, he explained to me somewhat hesitantly – well, that was the sequence in which the maple leaf and the lily – both symbols of the state – alternate with the naked guy (he didn’t know that I was myself) would. , ,
