Ich bin den Vereinigten Staaten und der US-Army dankbar, dass sie das Konzentrationslager in Ebensee im Mai 1945 befreit haben. Ich bin meiner Mutter dankbar, die mit meinem Vater 1953 nach Detroit ausgewandert war, dass sie sich – mit mir im 5. Monat schwanger – dazu entschlossen hatte, wieder nach Ebensee zurückzukehren, weil sie ihr Kind in Österreich zur Welt bringen wollte.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Die Revolution wird nicht im Fernsehen übertragen werden) ist ein Gedicht und Lied von Gil Scott-Heron (1949–2011), das er etwa 1969/70 verfasste. Die Titelzeile ist seit ihrer Veröffentlichung zu einem geflügelten Wort geworden. Ich habe in einem Jazz-Club in New York im Jahr 1995 Gil Scott-Heron dieses Lied singen gehört. Ich bin überzeugt, dass alle Trump-Anhänger*innen bei der Protest-Kundgebung vor dem Capitol in Washington und alle Besetzer*innen des Capitols Zillionen von Fotos und Videos aufgenommen bzw. live ins Netz gestreamt haben.

Gil Scott-Heron, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Der Text kritisiert die materialistische und konsumorientierte Prägung der Gesellschaft in den Vereinigten Staaten und im Speziellen das Fernsehen als das wichtigste Medium, das diese Lebensweise propagiert. Im Geist der US-amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung ist es ein Appell an die Afroamerikaner, sich aus der passiven Rolle des Medien- und auch Drogenkonsumenten zu lösen und selbst tätig zu werden, um den damals noch tiefer in der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft verankerten Rassismus und die Rassentrennung zu bekämpfen, zu überwinden und die eigenen Lebensumstände zu verbessern.

I am grateful to the United States and the US Army for liberating the Ebensee concentration camp in May 1945. I am grateful to my mother, who emigrated to Detroit with my father in 1953, for deciding – five months pregnant with me – to return to Ebensee because she wanted to give birth to her child in Austria. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (The Revolution Will Not Be Televised) is a poem and song by Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011), which he wrote around 1969/70. The title line has become a household word since its publication. I heard Gil Scott-Heron sing this song in a jazz club in New York in 1995. I am convinced that all Trump supporters at the protest rally in front of the Capitol in Washington and all the occupiers of the Capitol took zillions of photos and videos or streamed them live on the Internet. In the spirit of the US civil rights movement, it is an appeal to African Americans to break free from the passive role of media and drug users and to take action themselves to address the racism and racial segregation that was deeper anchored in US society at the time to fight, to overcome and to improve one’s own living conditions.
