Weiter auf den Spuren des „Archives de la Planète“. 02: Judengasse, Wien, Innere Stadt. Vom Versuch, eine „bestimmte“ Stelle zu finden. Eine Gegenüberstellung von Fotografien aus den Jahren 1913 und 2020. Wien | AT · 1913–2020 (© Les collections du musée départemental Albert-Kahn, Hauts-de-Seine © PP · Ewiges Archiv) Das vom französischen Bankier Albert Kahn gegründete „Archives de la Planète“ vereint hundert Stunden Filme und 72.000 Autochrome (Farbaufnahmen), die größte diesbezügliche Sammlung der Welt, das Ergebnis der Arbeit eines Dutzend Fotografen und Fotografinnen und Kameraleuten, die zwischen 1909 und 1931 ausgeschickt wurden, um die verschiedenen kulturellen Realitäten in fünfzig Ländern zu erfassen. (Näheres dazu „Auf den Spuren des „Archives de la Planète“ 01“) Aus dem damaligen Österreich-Ungarn sind 11 Autochrome im „Archiv des Planeten“, aufgenommen am 23. April 1913 vom Fotografen Auguste Léon, darunter eine Aufnahme der Judengasse in Wien. Ich habe nun versucht, die damals aufgenommenen Orte aus ähnlicher Perspektive mehr als 100 Jahre später wieder zu fotografieren und sie den Autochromen gegenüberzustellen. Ein vor Jahren aufgenommenes Foto „nachzufotografieren“, ist nicht ganz einfach: Zum Einen gilt es, den exakten Aufnahmestandpunkt zu finden, zum Anderen hat jede Kamera, insbesondere jede Optik ganz spezifische Darstellungs- und Verzerrungsmodalitäten, ohne präzise Vermessung ist es im Grunde unmöglich, die damals verwendete Brennweite festzustellen, um vergleichbare Bilder aufzunehmen. Ich hatte – ausgehend von einem Scan in niedriger Auflösung – einen A4 großen Farbausdruck des Autochromes von 1913 mit (linke Bildhälfte). Die Blickrichtung des Ausgangsbildes scheint eindeutig Richtung Donaukanal zu sein, meiner Einschätzung nach sind die damaligen Gebäude auf der rechten Seite nicht mehr vorhanden, die Judengasse ist auch auf den schmalen Stellen gegenwärtig breiter. Die Gasse ist immer noch mit Pflastersteinen belegt, allerdings schräg verlaufend, nicht quer wie im Jahr 1913. Die Herstellung von Autochromen verlangte lange Belichtungszeiten, was sich in der Unschärfe der Frauengruppe rechts vorne manifestiert. Während ich am Beginn der Judengasse stehe und versuche, mich anhand des Ausdrucks zu orientieren und erste Fotos mit einer ausgeborgten HiRes-Digitalkamera mache, ruft mir ein Mann, der mich beobachtet hatte, zu, ob ich etwas suchen würde. Er war, ein Fahrrad schiebend aus einer Ausfahrt eines Hauses gekommen. Ich zeigte ihm natürlich sehr gerne den Ausdruck, erzählte ihm ganz kurz die Hintergründe meines Unterfangens. Er schien sich recht sicher, dass die Stelle, an der wir standen, in etwa diejenige des Autochromes sei, in der Nähe des (damaligen) Lazenhofes, etwa auf Höhe Judengasse 6–10. Leider war er in Eile, lud mich aber ein, ihn in der benachbarten Salvatorgasse Nr. X zu besuchen, wo wir weiterreden könnten. Nach einer Reihe von Aufnahmen machte ich mich dann auf die Suche nach der angegebenen Adresse in der in der Nähe befindlichen Gasse, direkt bei der Kirche Maria am Gestade. Allein, trotz halbstündiger, intensiver Suche gelang es mir nicht, den Mann wieder zu finden. Schade – aber zumindest habe ich eine von vielen möglichen Gegenüberstellung. Wenn es schon nicht die exakte damalige Stelle ist, dann eben eine – wie ich finde, recht gute – „Samboldarstellung. Der Wille geht für’s Werk, sollte jemand den damaligen Aufnahmestandpunkt besser lokalisieren können, wäre ich für Hinweise dankbar!

Continuing on the trail of the “Archives de la Planète”. 02: Judengasse, Vienna, Inner City. Trying to find a “specific” job. A comparison of photographs from the years 1913 and 2020. Vienna | AT · 1913–2020 (© Les collections du musée départemental Albert-Kahn, Hauts-de-Seine © PP · Eternal Archives) The “Archives de la Planète” founded by the French banker Albert Kahn combines a hundred hours of films and 72,000 autochromes (color photographs) , the largest related collection in the world, the result of the work of a dozen photographers and cameramen who were sent between 1909 and 1931 to capture the different cultural realities in fifty countries. It is not easy to “take a picture” of a photo taken years ago: on the one hand, it is important to find the exact shooting position, on the other hand, every camera, in particular every optic, has very specific display and distortion modalities, without precise measurement it is basically impossible, determine the focal length used at that time to take comparable pictures. Based on a scan in low resolution, I had an A4 color print of the autochrom from 1913 (left half of the picture). The direction of view of the initial picture seems to be clearly towards the Danube Canal, in my opinion the buildings on the right are no longer available, the Judengasse is currently wider on the narrow places. The alley is still covered with cobblestones, but at an angle, not across as in 1913. The production of autochromes required long exposure times, which is manifested in the blur of the group of women on the right front. While I stand at the beginning of Judengasse and try to use the printout to orient myself and take the first photos with a borrowed HiRes digital camera, a man who has been watching me calls out to me if I would be looking for something. He had come out of a house pushing a bicycle. Of course, I was very happy to show him the printout and briefly told him the background of my undertaking. He seemed quite certain that the place where we stood was roughly that of the autochrome, near the (then) Lazenhof, at about Judengasse 6-10. Unfortunately he was in a hurry, but invited me to visit him in the neighboring Salvatorgasse No. X, where we could go on. After a series of pictures, I then went to look for the address given in the alley nearby, right by the church Maria am Gestade. Alone, despite an intensive search lasting half an hour, I was unable to find the man again. Too bad – but at least I have one of many possible comparisons. If it is not the exact position at that time, then what I think is a very good one – “Sambold representation.
