Spinoza wurde an diesem Ort als Sohn jüdischer Flüchtlinge geboren. Sein wichtigstes Werk ist die Ethik, in der er alle traditionellen Vorstellungen Gottes ablehnte und feststellte, dass das scheinbare Chaos der Natur durch unveränderliche Naturgesetze geregelt wird, die auch für Mensch und Gesellschaft gelten. Mit Hilfe der Mathematik können wir diese Gesetze kennen und Glück erreichen, indem wir in Harmonie mit ihnen leben. Spinozas Vorstellungen von Redefreiheit, Toleranz und Demokratie sind nach wie vor aktuell. "Der Zweck des Staates ist Freiheit" fasst seine politische Philosophie zusammen. Das Kunstwerk, eine Initiative der Spinoza Monument Foundation, stammt von Nicolas Dings (geb. 1953): Es besteht aus einer Terrazzo-Plattform, auf der die Bronzefigur von Spinoza und ein Ikosaeder aus poliertem Granit stehen, der auf die Schärfung des Geistes hinweist. Die Vögel auf dem Mantel, in denen sich Ringhalssittiche aus fernen Gegenden mit einheimischen Spatzen vermischen, symbolisieren die multikulturelle Gesellschaft Amsterdams. Die Skulptur, die am 24. November 2008 von Bürgermeister Job Cohen und Kultur-Ratsmitglied Carolien Gehrels enthüllt wurde, ehrt Spinoza als den Beginn der Aufklärung und Vorläufer der modernen Gesellschaft. Spinoza was born at this site as the son of Jewish refugees. His most important work is Ethics, in which he rejected all traditional cenceptions of God and stated thet nature’s apparent chaos is governed by immutable natural laws, which also apply to man and society. With the help of mathematics, we can know theses laws and achieve happiness by living in harmony with them. Spinoza’s ideas about freedom of speech, tolerance and democracy are still current. ”The purpose of the state is freedom” sums up his political philosophy. The artwork, an initiative of the Spinoza Monument Foundation, is by Nicolas Dings (b. 1953): It consists of a terrazzo platform upon which stands the bronze figure of Spinoza and an icosahedron of polished granite, referring to the sharpening of the mind. The birds on the cloak, in which ring-necked parakeets from faraway places intermingle with native sparrows, symbolize Amsterdam’s multicultural society. The sculpture, which was unveiled on November 24th 2008 by Mayor Job Cohen and Cultural Councillor Carolien Gehrels, honours Spinoza as the beginning of the Enlightenment and precursor of modern society. His most important work is ethics, in which he rejected all traditional beliefs of God and found that the apparent chaos of nature is governed by unchanging laws of nature, which also apply to man and society. With the help of mathematics, we can know these laws and achieve happiness by living in harmony with them. Spinoza’s notions of freedom of speech, tolerance and democracy are still current. “The purpose of the state is freedom” summarizes its political philosophy. The work of art, an initiative of the Spinoza Monument Foundation, was created by Nicolas Dings (born 1953): it consists of a terrazzo platform with a bronze figure of Spinoza and a polished granite icosahedron symbolizing the sharpening of the spirit.
