Agenten sterben einsam in Ebensee: Where Eagles Dare. Ebensee | AT · 1968 (filmstills: © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer · tableau: © PP · Ewiges Archiv) Als der „Action-Film“ gedreht wurde, war ich 14 Jahre alt – und einen Tag bei den Aufnahmen dabei! Hollywood-Produktion in Ebensee: Liz Taylor besucht ihren Mann Richard Burton in Ebensee am Filmset! Un-glaub-lich – aber wahr: Die Feuerkogel-Seilbahn in Ebensee war einer der Aufnahmeorte des Films, eine dramatische Verfolgungsjagd zwischen den in einem Bus davonrasenden Special Agents, verfolgt von deutschen Kommandos wurde im Weißenbachtal gedreht. Weil die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Langwies gemeinsam mit anderen Feuerwehren aus dem Bezirk dort Löschschaum als Schnee-Ersatz aufsprühte und die Väter von Freunden Mitglieder der FFL waren, konnte ich an einem Tag dorthin mitfahren und aus entsprechender Entfernung die Aufnahmen beobachten – insbesondere den vom Special Effects-Team durchlöcherten roten Bus mit einem Schneepflug vorne dran. Bei den Dreharbeiten kam es zu einem tragischen Zwischenfall: Der von Stuntmen gefahrene Bus kam auf dem Löschschaum ins Schleudern und schlitterte in ein Kamerateam, dabei wurde ein Camera-Operator getötet, andere Mitarbeiter schwer verletzt. (In den Originalcredits wurde der ums Leben gekommene Kameramann erwähnt, auf der DVD fehlen die Schlusscredits)

Zu den Filmstills:

1. Reihe: Opening credits (siehe link!); gefangene britische Agenten werden in der Talstation der Feuerkogelbahn von deutsche Soldaten zur Kabine gebracht. Die „Bergstation“ im Film war das Schloss Hohenwerfen im Land Salzburg. Die Feuerkogel-Seilbahn wurde in den vergangenen Jahren völlig umgebaut – aber ich kann mich sehr gut an die Talstation so erinnern, wie sie im Film zu sehen ist.

2. Reihe: Clint Eastwood und Richard Burton am Dach der Seilbahn, Ebensee bzw. das Langbathtal im Hintergrund (gefilmt im Studio mittels Frontprojektion); Feuerkogelbahn mit dem Traunstein rechts

3. Reihe: Stuntman springt von einer talabwärts fahrenden Kabine auf die bergaufwärts fahrende (er schlägt sich bei deisem Sprung 3 Zähne aus – in echt); Kampf auf dem Dach der Kabine, der im Kader sichtbare Deutsche stürzt anschließend in die Tiefe

4. Reihe: deutsche Soldaten in der Talstation eröffnen das Feuer auf die sich nähernde Kabine, in der sie die britischen Agenten glauben – die sind aber in den Langbathbach abgesprungen, nicht ohne vorher die Kabine vermint zu haben . . .

Agenten sterben einsam (Originaltitel: Where Eagles Dare) ist ein britisch-US-amerikanischer Agenten-Kriegsfilm aus dem Jahre 1968. Der im Zweiten Weltkrieg spielende Film wurde von dem US-amerikanischen Regisseur Brian G. Hutton nach einem Drehbuch von Alistair MacLean verfilmt. Ein Sonderkommando des britischen Geheimdienstes soll einen US-amerikanischen General aus deutscher Kriegsgefangenschaft befreien.

Hollywood production in Ebensee: Liz Taylor visits her husband Richard Burton in Ebensee on the film set! Unbelievable – but true: The Feuerkogel cable car in Ebensee was one of the shooting locations of the film, a dramatic chase between the on a bus raging Special Agents, pursued by German commandos was shot in the Weißenbachtal. Because the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Langwies together with other fire brigades from the district sprayed extinguishing foam there as a snow substitute and the fathers of friends were members of the FFL, I was able to ride there one day and observe the pictures from a corresponding distance – especially those from the Special Effects department. Team perforated red bus with a snowplow in front. During the shooting, there was a tragic incident: The stuntmen driven bus skidded on the foam and skidded into a camera team, it was a camera operator killed, other employees seriously injured. (The cameraman died in the original credits, the final credits are missing on the DVD)
To the film stills:
1st row: Opening credits (see link!); Captured British agents are taken to the cabin by German soldiers in the valley station of the Feuerkogelbahn. The “mountain station” in the film was Hohenwerfen Castle in the province of Salzburg. The Feuerkogel cable car has been completely rebuilt in recent years – but I can well remember the valley station as seen in the movie.

Where Eagles Dare is a 1968 British Metrocolor World War II action film directed by Brian G. Hutton and starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, and Mary Ure. It was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, filmed in Panavision, and shot on location in Austria and Bavaria. Alistair MacLean wrote the screenplay, his first, at the same time that he wrote the novel of the same name. Both became commercial successes.

The film involved some of the top filmmakers of the day and is now considered a classic.^[3] Major contributors included Hollywood stuntman Yakima Canutt, who as second-unit director shot most of the action scenes; British stuntman Alf Joint who doubled for Burton in such sequences as the fight on top of the cable car; award-winning conductor and composer Ron Goodwin, who wrote the film score; and future Oscar-nominee Arthur Ibbetson, who worked on its cinematography. The film is noted for the phrase “Broadsword calling Danny Boy”, spoken by Richard Burton several times throughout. The phrase is frequently used by Richard Burton impressionists.
