16 mm Bolex

Mit der 16-mm Bolex Jean-Marie Le Pen filmen (und anderes auch noch) Montréal | CA; Paris | FR; Wien | AT · 1988 – 2017 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) 1990 lebte ich ein halbes Jahr in Paris in der Cité des arts internationale – eine politisch sehr bewegte Zeit, die ich versuchte, so gut es ging und soweit es meine Mittel zuließen, mit Filmkamera und Fotoapparat zu dokumentieren. Ein befreundeter Journalist, der im Auftrag eines Magazins sich oft über J-M Le Pen, des Gründers der rechtsextremen Front National (FN) Reportagen machte. Dieser verschaffte mir einen Presseausweis, nahm mich manchmal zu Aufmärschen und Demonstrationen der FN mit, unter anderem zu einem riesigen Umzug am 1. Mai „zu Ehren von Jeanne d’Arc“ – einer Art Säulenheiligen der FN. Bei diesem Umzug stand ich dann unversehens vor der Tribüne und hatte die Gelegenheit, eine Animationssequenz mit J-M Le Pen aufzunehmen (siehe Film „Paris-Paname“ – auf youtube) Eines Tages nahm mich der Journalist auch in die Nationalversammlung zu einer Pressekonferenz von Le Pen mit. Auf dem Weg zur Pressekonferenz begegneten wir Le Pen – ich nutzte die Gunst der Stunde und bat ihn als „Journalist aus Österreich“ um ein Interview, für das er dann kurz stehenblieb. Mit einem „Walkman“ und in schlechtem Französisch fragte ich ihn dann vornehmlich über die Beziehungen von Jörg Haider mit der FN etc. Die Audiokassette von damals finde ich natürlich nicht mehr (aber vermutlich wäre mir mein Kauderwelsch peinlich). Im Raum der Pressekonferenz dann dicht gepackt Jornalist*innen und Fotograf*innen – ich mitten drin, schwitzend, mit praktischer Anglerjacke, in denen ich die Objektive und Filmrollen etc mittrug. (Großes Foto links) Filmen mit einer 16-mm Kamera heißt: jede Sekunde auf den Auslöser drücken kostet viel Geld: Filmmaterial, Entwicklung, Muster, Schnitt etc.

Die „Bolex handcrank“ ( also mit Handaufzug, mit dem die Feder des Motors gespannt wird) hatte ich um ca 200 CAN $ zwei Jahre vorher in Montréal gekauft – mit dieser Kamera drehte ich den Film „Mont Real“ (auch youtube). Mit der Kamera lebte ich buchstäblich mit meiner damaligen Frau in einer Wohnung – das Schlafzimmer war während der ganzen Zeit zur Hälfte „Filmstudio“ für die Animationssequenzen (gr. Foto rechts) die Kamera stand oft am Tisch beim Essen – siehe oberes Foto rechts. Das Foto unten gibt mir selber ein Rätsel auf: auch 1990 in Paris – meine Bolex auf Stativ schaut zu einem geöffneten Fenster mit Mann, Mädchen und Hund! C’est la vie

Filming with the 16mm Bolex Jean-Marie Le Pen (and more) Montréal | CA; Paris | FR; Vienna | AT · 1988 – 2017 (© PP · Eternal Archives) In 1990, I lived for half a year in Paris at the Cité des arts international – a politically very eventful time, which I tried to do as well as possible and as far as my means allowed, with film camera and camera to document. A journalist friendly, who on behalf of a magazine often reports on J-M Le Pen, the founder of the far-right Front National (FN). This gave me a press card, sometimes took me to marches and demonstrations of the FN, including a huge move on May 1 “in honor of Joan of Arc” – a kind of pillar saint of the FN. During this procession, I suddenly stood in front of the grandstand and had the opportunity to record an animated sequence with JM Le Pen (see movie “Paris-Paname” – on youtube). One day the journalist also took me to the National Assembly for a press conference with Le Pen With. On the way to the press conference we met Le Pen – I took advantage of the hour and asked him as a “journalist from Austria” for an interview, for which he then stopped briefly. With a “Walkman” and in bad French, I asked him mainly about the relationships of Jörg Haider with the FN, etc. Of course, I find the audio cassette of that time no more (but probably I would be embarrassed my gibberish). In the room of the press conference then tightly packed journalists and photographers – I am in the middle of it, sweating, with a practical fishing jacket, in which I contributed the lenses and film rolls etc. (Big picture on the left) Filming with a 16 mm camera means: pressing the trigger every second costs a lot of money: film material, development, pattern, editing, etc.
The “Bolex handcrank” (hand-wound, with which the spring of the engine is stretched) I had bought about 200 CAN $ two years before in Montréal – with this camera I shot the movie “Mont Real” (also youtube). With the camera I literally lived with my then wife in an apartment – the bedroom was during the whole time half “film studio” for the animation sequences (large photo right) the camera was often at the table at the food – see upper photo right. The photo below gives me a riddle: even in 1990 in Paris – my Bolex on tripod looks to an open window with man, girl and dog! C’est la vie
