Zwei Pferde, acht Personen, darunter ein Kleinkind – alle schon gestorben. Was ich über dieses Foto mit Sicherheit sagen/schreiben kann. Salzkammergut | AT · um 1910 (Foto: Johann Promberger, Repro: Dieter Brasch, © PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ich kann mich noch gut erinnern daran, wie ich dieses Foto vor fast 45 Jahren erstmals in der Entwicklerwanne allmählich erscheinen sah: Die links und rechts – symmetrisch – halb ins Bild ragenden Pferde (klar, weil groß) und dann die sitzende Frau mit dem kleinen, bloßfüßigen Mädchen am Schoß. Der Gesichtsausdruck der Frau, das Kind, die Füße überkreuzt, das Gesicht unscharf, weil bewegt während der Aufnahme. Die Kleidung der Personen. Das Foto unterscheidet sich von vielen der Gruppenaufnahmen, die der Fotograf Johann Promberger hinterlassen hat. Bei fast allen derartigen Fotos, die er von Nachbarn, Bekannten – wohl meist auf deren Bitte hin – aufgenommen hatte, sind die Fotografierten in Feiertagskleidung zu sehen, teils in Tracht sitzen oder stehen sie da. Hier – zumindest nicht in der ersten Reihe – offensichtlich nicht. Der Mann auf der linken Bildseite mit Hut, halboffenem Hemd und aufgekrempelten Ärmeln, Schürze, Stiefeln, hält seine Hand am Zaumzeug des Pferdes. Ein „Stallbursche“? Ein Knecht? Der sitzende Mann auch mit Schürze schaut direkt in die Richtung des Fotografen, seine Linke hält eine Stielpfeife mit Pfeifendeckel. Die hinteren drei Frauen schauen nach links. Die sitzende alte Frau mit hellem Kopftuch, das Kind. Der Mann rechts beim Pferd, in der rechten Hand den Rest einer Zigarette, die linke Hand eingestützt. Außenaufnahme, links im Hintergrund ein hözernes Gatter, erst beim genaueren Betrachten (das ist mir vor vier Jahrzehnten nicht aufgefallen, erst jetzt, durch das neue Repro) ist das Dach einer kleinen Holzhütte zu sehen, die durch dichten Bewuchs verdeckt ist.

Wem gehörten die Pferde, waren das die Arbeiter*innen eines Bauernhofes? Wer waren diese Menschen? Zumindest die Personen der ersten Reihe scheinen – von Kleidung und Gesichtsausdruck her geschlossen, nicht „reich“ gewesen zu sein.

Viele Fragen – eigentlich: alles unklar. Niemand, den ich noch fragen könnte. Sicher nur: Zwei Pferde, acht Personen, darunter ein Kleinkind – alle schon gestorben.

Salzkammergut | AT · around 1910 (Photo: Johann Promberger, Repro: Dieter Brasch, © PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) I can still remember how I saw this photo gradually appearing in the developer tray for the first time almost 45 years ago: The one on the left and on the right – symmetrically – horses half protruding into the picture (clear, because they are large) and then the seated woman with the little bare-footed girl on her lap. The facial expression of the woman, the child, the feet crossed, the face out of focus because moved during the recording. People’s clothes. The photo differs from many of the group shots that photographer Johann Promberger left behind. In almost all such photos that he took of neighbors and acquaintances – mostly at their request – the photographed can be seen in holiday clothes, some in traditional costume sitting or standing there. Obviously not here – at least not in the front row. The man on the left side of the picture with hat, half-open shirt and rolled-up sleeves, apron, boots, holds his hand on the horse’s bridle. A “stable boy”? A servant? The seated man, also wearing an apron, looks directly in the direction of the photographer, his left hand is holding a pipe with a pipe cap. The back three women look to the left. The seated old woman with a light headscarf, the child. The man on the right by the horse, the rest of a cigarette in his right hand, his left hand propped up. Exterior shot, on the left in the background a wooden gate, only on closer inspection (I didn’t notice that four decades ago, only now, thanks to the new repro) can the roof of a small wooden hut be seen, which is covered by thick vegetation. Who did the horses belong to, were they the workers of a farm? Who were these people? At least the people in the first row seem to have been closed from their clothes and facial expressions, not to have been “rich”. Lots of questions – actually: all unclear. No one else I could ask. Sure only: two horses, eight people, including a toddler – all of whom have already died.
