Das Unendlichzeichen (∞ oder ∞) ist ein mathematisches Zeichen, mit dem Unendlichkeit symbolisiert wird. Es ähnelt einer liegenden Ziffer Acht. In der Bedeutung als unendlich große Zahl wurde es 1655 von dem englischen Mathematiker John Wallis eingeführt. Die Gründe für diese Wahl sind nicht restlos geklärt; möglicherweise entstand es aus einer Ligatur ↀ des römischen Zahlzeichens CIƆ für die Zahl 1000, oder als geschlossene Variante des letzten griechischen Kleinbuchstabens ω (Omega). Je nach Schriftart sind die beiden Schleifen gleich groß, oder die linke kleiner. In der modernen Mathematik wird das Unendlichzeichen vor allem zur Beschreibung von Grenzwerten bei Folgen und Reihen eingesetzt. Als Symbol wird es mit übertragener Bedeutung auch außerhalb der Mathematik verwendet.

The infinity sign (∞ or ∞) is a mathematical sign used to symbolize infinity. It resembles a lying figure eight. It was introduced in 1655 by the English mathematician John Wallis to mean an infinitely large number. The reasons for this choice are not completely clear; it may have originated from a ligature ↀ of the Roman numeral CIƆ for the number 1000, or as a closed variant of the last Greek lowercase letter ω (omega). Depending on the font, the two loops are the same size, or the left one is smaller. In modern mathematics, the infinity sign is mainly used to describe limit values for sequences and series. As a symbol, it is also used with a figurative meaning outside of mathematics.
